24 point fourth quarter propels Hilliard Davidson past Watterson

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After tonight, we are happy to say the OCC and Columbus Catholic are back in action. This Friday offered an intriguing non-conference matchup between Hilliard Davidson and Bishop Watterson. Davidson topped Watterson 62-52 behind a 24 fourth quarter outburst.

A balanced scoring attack gave Davidson an early 17-11 lead after one.

Bishop Watterson bounced back in the second quarter as they received a big spark from sophomore post Cole Rhett, who scored six points in the quarter. He had a big block as well and really shifted the momentum. Davis Boone added six as well and Watterson trailed 29-24 at the half.

Watterson carried that momentum over into the second half, winning the third quarter and taking the lead 40-38 with 6 minutes remaining in the game.

Led by a 12 point second half from Jayden Nervis, Hilliard Davidson outscored Watterson 24-12 for the remainder of the game to secure the win.

For Hilliard Davidson Nervis led all scorers with 16, Jared Frey chipped in 11 and Ryan Paris added 10.

For Watterson, Jacob Hoying led with 12 points, Boone added 11 and Rhett added 8 points.

Jayden Nervis (6’5 WG / Hilliard Davidson / 2022): Nervis didn’t have the best shooting night, but he continued to play hard as he crashed the offensive glass for some easy baskets. When he show his shot wasn’t falling he made it a point of emphasis to get to the basket where he was able to get to the line often and had some tough finishes through contact. He looked the part of an all conference type of performer.

Ryan Paris (6’3 G / Hilliard Davidson / 2022): Paris only had ten points, but he still caught our eye with his play making ability. He had four assists and made some great passes to teammates that were not converted . He was best when he initiated the offense. He showed off his shooting touch as well, knocking down two catch and shoot threes.

Cole Rhett (6’6 C / Bishop Watterson / 2023): The sophomore post is a young big to keep an eye on over the next few years. He is still raw, but he showed some flashes making some good passes out of the post. He played with alot of energy as well crashing the offensive glass and scoring inside . On defense he’s showed some rim protecting ability coming up with two blocks.
