Gahanna junior guard Edyn Battle led the Lions with 23 points in a huge win

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio -- It has been a week to remember for the Battle siblings.

With her older brother Jay Battle putting Baldwin Wallace on his back to lead the Yellow Jackets to an Ohio Athletic Conference championship that was culminated with a career-high 33-point performance in the title game on Saturday, Gahanna junior guard Edyn Battle had a mega challenge of her own on Wednesday.

Squaring off with Jacy Sheldon and No. 3 Dublin Coffman (22-3), Battle's 23 points and game-winning assist to senior Madison Hensley helped No. 8 Gahanna (18-7) complete the upset, taking down the Rocks 75-72 in the Division I district semifinals.

In a situation that was much like her brother's last week, Battle led an underdog team against a big-time opponent.

While Battle led the Lions with 23 points, she was not alone in the backcourt. Fellow junior Morgan Darnell had a monster second half, scoring five-straight points in the final minutes to put Gahanna up 72-70 with 1:45 remaining.

Going to Sheldon, Coffman tied the game with 31 seconds to go, as a tough driving score from the Ohio State signee notched things at 72.

Holding for the final shot, Battle commanded the Gahanna offense on the game's biggest possession.

Clearing space and attacking off the dribble, Battle got past her defender and forced helpside defense on a strong left hand drive. With Hensley's defender sagging off to stop the drive, Battle made the right basketball play.

Delivering a pinpoint pass, Battle hit Hensley on the left wing as the senior drained a three-point field goal with 8.5 seconds remaining. With Coffman out of timeouts, Gahanna double teamed Sheldon on the game's final possession, forcing the Ohio State signee to give up the ball.

Sheldon dished to senior Kaitlyn Kopyar, who missed a half court heave at the buzzer which sealed Gahanna's upset win.

Despite going into halftime leading 39-25 and holding Sheldon to seven points, Gahanna suffered a major blow from the area's leading scorer in the third quarter.

Going off for 20 points in the quarter alone, Sheldon knocked down four threes and dominated off the dribble, helping Coffman outscore Gahanna 34-16 in the period. Going into the final frame leading 59-55, Coffman looked to be in control of Wednesday's game.

Despite only having one senior on the roster, the young Lions never backed down.

Gahanna's backcourt duo of Battle and Darnell struck first in the fourth quarter, going on a 4-0 run and tying the game at 59 with 6:54 to go.

Coffman didn't back down, as freshman forward Imari Russell's steal and score put the Rocks up 68-64 with 3:11 remaining.

This was where Hensley began to impact the game. Responding with a three-point play, Hensley helped trim the lead to 68-67 with 2:59 to go.

Russell stepped back up, as a strong driving score from the 5-foot-10 forward increased Coffman's lead back to three at 70-67 with 2:46 to go.

Unfortunately for Coffman, the Rocks did not score again for more than two minutes.

Darnell responded instantly with a cold-blooded three 10 seconds later, tying the game at 70 with 2:36 to go.

Forcing a stop on the next possession, Gahanna put the ball in the hands of Darnell once again. Slashing to the rim for a tough driving score, Darnell's go-ahead bucket put Gahanna up 72-70 with 1:45 remaining.

Coffman had a chance to tie the game at the free throw line with 1:21 to go, however, Kopyar missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Rocks pulled down multiple offensive rebounds but did not convert.

Darnell also missed the front end of a one-and-one moments later, which allowed for Sheldon to tie the game on a strong right hand finish with 31 seconds to go.

After impacting early on as a scorer, Battle made the biggest assist of the game on Gahanna's final possession, as Hensley's game-winning three hit nothing but net to lead the Lions to the win.

Battle led the Lions with 23 points, knocking down four threes and scoring a few tough finishes at the rim. A tough wing guard with her brother's motor and leadership ability, Battle played the type of big-time game to help lead Gahanna to a win.

Darnell came alive in the second half, scoring 14 of her 19 points after halftime. Darnell hit four triples and excelled as a facilitator in Gahanna's backcourt, showing off a tight handle, high IQ and strong passing ability.

The hero Hensley pitched in 14 points, scoring all six of her second half points in the fourth quarter. Hensley led the Lions with eight rebounds, playing a tough game on both ends.

Coming off the bench in the fourth quarter, sophomore guard Ciarra Carter made a huge impact on the defensive perimeter, as her on-ball defense against Sheldon slowed down the Ohio State signee. Carter's efforts helped hold Sheldon to just four points in the final period after going for 20 in the third quarter alone.

Knocking down 14 threes as a team, Gahanna got great bench production, as junior guard Kyra Smith came in and hit two threes in the second quarter surge. Freshman forward Gabby Anderon played a strong game, adding six points and four rebounds.

For Coffman, Sheldon was outstanding, finishing with 31 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in the final game of an amazing high school career. Sheldon's scoring explosion in the third quarter was as good as any we have seen all year, boys or girls, as she got it going off the dribble as a shooter, hitting four threes and scoring at will at the rim.

Sheldon faced multiple defenders for great stretches in the first half, as Gahanna used a physical on-ball approach against the 2,000-point career scorer. Sheldon got loose in the second half with back-to-back rhythm threes to power a 34-16 third quarter for the Rocks.

The freshman sensation Russell was outstanding on both ends of the floor, impacting the game as an enforcer at the rim, finishing with 18 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Russell is a physical 5-foot-10 forward that made a terrific two-way impact for the Rocks.

Junior guard Juliana Burris finished with 11 points, nine of which in the second half while Kopyar hit two threes and added eight points. Senior forward Riley Wagoner may have only scored two points, but played a solid offensive game, adding four rebounds and four assists.

With the upset win, Gahanna will look to keep things rolling in the district finals against No. 6 Westerville South, who defeated Tri-Valley on Wednesday.

Saturday's district final will tip off at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Ohio Dominican.
