A look at the sectional final action in the Division I girls tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The 2019 Division I Ohio High School girls basketball tournament continued play this weekend. Spots in the district tournament portion of the bracket were on the line. The top seeds in the Central District took care of business collectively, outscoring their opponents by a combined scored of 297-66 en route to district berths.

Top seeded Pickerington Central (92 points) and second seeded Newark (96 points) almost reached the century mark in their sectional final victories. Beyond the top seeds taking care of business, there was plenty of exciting action that unfolded in the second round.

Here is an overview of some other matchups of the sectional finals:

No. 17 Dublin Scioto vs. No. 19 Marion Harding

The Irish of Dublin Scioto punched their ticket to districts with a 63-59 overtime win. Marion Harding rallied back in the fourth quarter after trailing 48-36 heading into the final frame. The Irish used strong defense holding Marion Harding to only four points in securing the victory. Natalie Hutras led Scioto in scoring with 18 points in the winning effort. Freeman had a game-high 19 points for Marion Harding despite the loss. Dublin Scioto faces a tall task as it has a tilt with top seeded Pickerington Central in the district semifinals.

No. 12 Northland vs. No. 31 Watkins Memorial

Northland used a 16-8 advantage in the fourth quarter to come away with a 52-44 win on its way to districts. The teams played to a 36-36 deadlock after three quarters of play before Northland pulled away down the stretch. Both teams shot well from beyond the arc, knocking down 15 combined three-pointers. Northland held a 9-6 advantage in that department. Iyanna Bonner paced the Vikings in scoring with 14 points. Watkins Memorial’s Emily Irwin had a game-high 17 points in the losing effort.  Northland advances to face off against Upper Arlington in the district semifinals Wednesday evening.

No. 11 Teays Valley vs. No. 18 Canal Winchester

The Teays Valley Vikings used a balanced offensive attack to win an exciting overtime contest by a score of 59-53 to advance to districts. Jaylah Captain was one of four double-digit contributors in leading the Vikings in scoring with 16 points. Canal Winchester’s Natalie Rarick matched Captain’s output with 16 points of her own. A key advantage that Teays Valley held was connecting on nine shots from beyond the arc compared to Canal’s four. With the win, the Vikings will take on Reynoldsburg in the district semifinals come Wednesday night.
