A look at all of the Division I girls action from the first round

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The 2019 Division I Ohio High School state tournament tipped off this weekend around the area. The top seeds in the central district include Pickerington Central (one seed), Newark (two seed), Dublin Coffman (three seed), Bishop Watterson (four seed) and Reynoldsburg rounding out the top five. A regional berth will be hard earned as the competitive central district figures to offer great matchups in deciding the winner.

Here is an overview of some of the key matchups of the first round:


No. 1 Pickerington Central vs. No. 38 Groveport

The top seeded Tigers (22-1) cruised in first round action over the Cruisers (5-18) by a score of 77-29. The game was never in doubt as Pickerington Central flexed its muscles from the tip. Jocelyn Tate paced the tigers in scoring with 16 points. Other double-digit contributors included Madison Greene (12 points) and Jada Tate (10 points). The lone player to eclipse double figures for Groveport was Casey Humphrey tallying 14 points. The Tigers look to punch their ticket to districts as they take on Hamilton Township come Friday.

No. 2 Newark vs. No. 42 Mount Vernon

The Wildcats of Newark breezed through their opening round tilt, winning 65-20. Newark (21-3) connected on nine shots from beyond the arc en route to a convincing victory. Katie Shumate registered a game-high 23 points. Gabby Stare (15 points) and Emma Shumate (14 points) were among the other top scorers in the contest. Mount Vernon (2-20) was led in scoring by Bryn Elliott with 10 points. Newark will take on Briggs to earn a spot in the district bracket Friday evening.

No. 3 Dublin Coffman vs. No.39 Grove City

The third seeded Shamrocks (21-2) defeated Grove City (3-20) 73-15 in opening round action. Jacy Sheldon and Imarianah Russell combined for 45 points in leading Coffman to victory. Grove City fell behind quickly and couldn’t recover from being outscored 32-2 in the first quarter. Dublin Coffman will take on Westland for a spot in the districts come Wednesday evening.

No. 4 Bishop Watterson vs. No. 36 Hilliard Bradley

Bishop Watterson survived a close first round contest with Hilliard Bradley, winning 34-25. Points were at a premium as each team only registered one double-digit scoring quarter a piece. Paige Woodford tallied 14 points in pacing Watterson to victory. Hilliard Bradley’s Chloe Callahan registered a game-high 17 points but didn’t have enough scoring around her for Bradley to pull off the upset. Watterson will take on Pickerington North Friday evening to advance to the districts.

No. 5 Reynoldsburg vs. No. 37 Central Crossing

Reynoldsburg (17-6) opened tournament play by beating Central Crossing (5-18) 56-18. The Raiders held Central Crossing to single digits in all four frames. Destiny Fields (15 points) and Uju Ezeudu (14 points) paced Reynoldsburg in scoring on its way to a convincing victory. The fifth-seeded Raiders will take on Mifflin in the sectional finals.
