Warriors roll past St. Peter's behind lockdown defense and efficient perimeter shooting

CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio -- In what looked to be an intriguing late season non-league matchup on Saturday, Harvest Prep dominated Mansfield St. Peter's, cruising to a dominant 86-47 win.

With the Warriors rolling out just one of their typical starters due to Senior Night festivities, St. Peter's stayed in the game early on. After the teams traded triples to start out, a floater from Eli Gurski answered a basket from Harvest Prep senior Andrew Tate  to tie it at 5 with 6:25 to go in the first.

Once Harvest Prep inserted their starting lineup around the six minute mark in the first, they turned up their defensive pressure to go on a 7-0 run in the span of a minute.

Making his marking on the game immediatly Harvest Prep star CJ Anthony coverted a tough and-one followed up by a three-pointer on the next possession to cap the run and increase their lead to 12-5 with 5:04 to go in the first.

Responding with several easy layups from senior Caleb Stewart, St. Peter's cut the deficit to 15-9 with 4:37 left in the first before the Warriors closed the quarter on a huge run.

After a three from Anthony was answered by a lay-in on the other end, the Warriors ended the first on a 6-0 run that was finished off by a putback from senior Elijah Glenn to take a sizeable 24-11 lead into the second.

Behind highly efficient team shooting, frantic trapping defense and excellent effort plays, they completely took control of the game in the second.

Going on a 17-5 run in the midst of four minutes in the quarter, they built on their lead comfortably before both teams went cold for the final three minutes of the half, sending us into the break with Harvest Prep ahead 42-19.

After St. Peter's showed some life by hitting two three's to open the third quarter, Harvest Prep shut out any doubt as to what the outcome of this one would be.

Doing what they do best in the second half, the Warriors rolled to this win behind big momentum boosting plays including two dunks from senior Brandon Beavers

Showing why they are one of the best Division III teams in the entire state tonight, Harvest Prep dominated on both ends of the ball in order to roll to this win.

Anthony led the way for them once again by scoring 25 points despite coming off of the bench due to the Warriors starting strictly seniors. He did everything he wanted to with ease tonight and showed why he's ready to take the Warriors on another deep tournament run.

Tate also scored 16 points, grabbed four rebounds and picked up two steals in a good two-way outing for the senior. Fellow senior Avonti Duncan scored 13 points to go along with six rebounds and Beavers turned in another great performance with 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Continuing to click on all cylinders right now, Harvest Prep will have a favorable first round matchup at home against No. 25 International in the first round as they get ready to embark on another deep playoff run.

CJ Anthony (6'1 G / Harvest Prep / 2020): Putting together yet another fantastic outing tonight, Anthony had his fingerprints all over this game since entering despite not being in the starting lineup.

In what was my second viewing of the junior this season, his shot-making ability and confidence continued to wow me on the offensive end. Hitting five triples in very efficient fashion,  CJ showed off his outside stroke that he is continuing to polish as one of the best around regardless of if it is off the dribble or the catch. He also bullied his way through the lane on multiple occasions for several easy scores against an overmatched Spartans backcourt. Another trait that impressed was his decision making, as he didn't force any shots and made the right reads in the right spots almost everytime.

On defense, CJ did an excellent job trapping and making opposing ball handlers uncomfortable all night alongside Beavers. He used his quick feet, active hands and excellent combination of speed and quickness to force turnovers and create easy scores all night.

One of the best guards around, Anthony has Harvest Prep primed for another final four run.

Andrew Tate (6'5 WF / Harvest Prep / 2019): Standing at 6-foot-5 with a good build, Tate has solid measurables for a collegiate wing given his long wingspan. With the athleticism to defend almost every position at the high school level, he fits perfectly into the up tempo style of play that Harvest Prep is known to play and he showed that tonight.

On offense, the senior can score from all three levels, but did his most damage tonight as a spot-up shooter. Hitting shots from the mid-range and hitting three triples, he showed off a smooth release that he can use best off the catch as opposed to the dribble, but he can also hit pull-up shots. He also scored on the offensive glass and by getting to the rim as he was no matchup for anybody on the Spartan roster.

He did a great job of using his length to his advantage on defense and came up with a pair of steals along with giving St. Peter's problems all night on the perimieter. An above-average athlete with several marketable traits on both sides of the basketball, Tate would be an excellent pickup for any Division III program who is looking for a wing.

Brandon Beavers (6'2 PG / Harvest Prep / 2019): Beavers put on a show for the home crowd on Senior Night tonight, finishing with an excellent stat line of 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals, including two monster dunks. For an in-depth look at Brandon, check out our unsigned senior report on him. He is a great look for any low Division II program in need of an excellent two-way guard who is only improving.
