COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Arriving for the first time in 270 Hoops history, we present the Division IV Central District tournament seeding guide. This is our most comprehensive report yet, as we unveil brand new metrics that make this more accurate than ever before.
Grouping every area team from Division I to Division IV in tiers, we applied points for each team in each tier. For example, a win over Fisher Catholic counts for 15 points, while a win over Madison Christian counts for 3 points.
While we presented the first edition of the Strength of Record metric last season that measured wins only, we have included an "Impact Loss" metric that subtracts the difference in the point values between a higher tiered team that lost to a lower tiered team.
For example, Tree of Life's tier value is 15 points. The Trojans lost earlier this month to Shekinah Christian, whose tier value is 9 points. That loss for Tree of Life takes 6 points off its total strength of record for the season.
This loss metric truly evaluates the totality of a team's path and gives this guide as accurate of an outlook as possible. If a team has beaten nothing but low quality opponents and has a bad loss to a team much lower than them, this metric accounts for that.
This metric also takes into account wins and losses to teams in higher divisions. Teams in Division IV are not penalized for any losses to Division I programs, regardless of the talent level. All Division II teams receive a tier value boost of 6 points for any win, while Division III teams receive a tier value boost of 3 points for any win.
This also comes into play for losses. For example, Fairfield Christian lost earlier this year to Grove City Christian. GCC's Division III value is 3 points, which when evaluating Division IV teams, is boosted to 6 points. Since Fairfield Christian's tier value is 9 points, they lose 3 points off their total Strength of Record rating from that loss.
There are several exceptions here. Especially with a team like Wellington, who has a Division III value of 9 points, but is far superior to most of Division IV. No team in D4 was penalized for losses to Wellington, while a win like what Fisher Catholic had on Thursday, nets the Irish 12 points for beating the Jags.
This metric rewards programs for going out and challenging themselves in non-conference against Division I, II and III teams, while not overly rewarding programs for beating inferior non-OHSAA member programs.
There hasn't been anything quite like this before, and we are very happy to share it with the rest of the area.
Take that for data! Let's dig into the results. Below our Strength of Record rankings, we have our adjusted seedings on how we would the seed the district tournament.
