Jack Sawyer dominated the Indians by going for 24 points and nine rebounds

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- In a primetime OCC non-league matchup on Tuesday night, Jack Sawyer did Jack Sawyer things, as he dominated Canal Winchester (17-2) and Pickerington North (15-4) picked up a huge win, taking down the Indians 92-63.

Going for 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals, he owned the game since the opening tip in his first action since committing to play football at Ohio State on Sunday. The Indians had no matchup for Sawyer all night, and the Panthers took advantage.

The first six minutes of the game played completely opposite of the rest. With both squads struggling to hit shots, Pickerington North jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in a slow paced start.

Canal Winchester did not see their first field goal drop until the 1:44 mark of the first, but a triple from junior Bilal Sow before the buzzer helped cut the Panther lead to 14-8 after the first.

Junior Jack Beeler hit a big three for Canal early in the second to trim the deficit to 16-11, and they used this momentum to bring it as close as 22-18 with 4:32 to go in the half.

Pickerington North answered with big 14-5 run before the end of the half capped off by a deep turnaround three from junior Hunter Shedenhelm at the buzzer. The duo of Sawyer and junior Chris Scott created many easy inside looks for the Panthers to build this lead.

Taking control in the third, Pickerington North turned up the defensive pressure and forced many turnovers with tight on-ball defense. Shedenhelm and Sawyer took the game over in the quarter as well, as two big three’s from Shedenhelm coupled with a big and-one from Sawyer increased their lead to 58-40 with 1:19 to go in the third.

The fourth quarter spelled the same troubles for Canal, as their only sources of offense came from juniors Cole Metzler and Bilal Sow inside. The two fought all night for the Indians on the interior, but were simply overmatched as a unit.

Sow led them with 21 points and Metzler tallied a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Brady Snyder also came up with a solid stat line of 11 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

They will look to get back in the win column at home on Friday against New Albany.

Extending their lead to as much as 32 points in the frame, Pickerington North cruised to this win at home.

Outside of Sawyer’s dominant stat line, senior Mike Lowery scored 14 points and Scott chipped in with 13. Shedenhelm played an excellent all-around game, going for 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Freshman Jerry Saunders also scored eight and sophomore Casey George scored six, both off of the bench.

They’re back in action on Friday with a big league game at Reynoldsburg.
