Huge 27-2 stretch powers Jaguars past Berne Union

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- In a game that was very competitive in the first half, Wellington (11-4) used a 17-0 run to open the second half behind the play of senior Dallas Patrick and sophomore Marcus Stewart to take down Berne Union (8-6) by a score of 60-37. The two combined to outscore the Rockets, going for 39 points collectively.

After both teams were feeling each other out early on the first, a big three-pointer from Berne Union sophomore Brock Unger tied the game at 11 heading into the second, a position that the Rockets felt good about.

The second quarter was very back-and-forth as well. Stewart and Patrick continued to trade buckets with Berne Union senior wing Zane Mirgon, but the Jaguars took control shortly after.

Trailing 21-20 with 3:45 to play in the half after a tough post score from Mirgon, Wellington unleashed a quick 10-2 run behind five points from Stewart to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room.

After taking all the momentum into the break, Wellington scored a quick seven unanswered points to force a Berne Union timeout trailing 37-23 with 6:43 to go in the third. The Jaguars created these points by creating multiple turnovers and capitalizing on the other end.

Patrick knocked down back-to-back three-pointers after this, stretching the run to as large as 17-0.

From the last four minutes of the first half until six minutes into the third, the Jaguars put together a 27-2 run. This ultimately devastated Berne Union, as the fourth quarter did not see a change in play, wrapping this one up for good.

Berne Union was led by Mirgon and Unger, who each scored eight points a piece. Senior’s Chaz Dickerson (seven points) and Jacob Harmon (five points) combined for 12 points on a night where the Rockets did not have a single player in double figures.

Despite only scoring four points, junior Chase McCartney may have had the most impressive stat line for Berne Union. He finished with four points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in a game where he competed hard all night long.

The Rockets will be back in action on Wednesday with a tough non-league game against Circleville.

Wellington was led by Patrick, who finished with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds to go along with five steals. Stewart also added 19 points and three rebounds while knocking down three triples. Junior Connor Herrick also scored eight points and freshman Chase Oullette had an impressive showing of six points and seven rebounds to go along with three steals.

They have another league game this Friday as they get set to host Fisher Catholic.

Dallas Patrick (6’1 CG / Wellington / 2019): Patrick was simply too athletic for Berne Union tonight, as he is most opponents in the MSL-Cardinal. The unsigned senior went for a dominant stat line of 20 points, 13 rebounds and five steals. As he gets most of the defense’s attention in every game that Wellington plays, the senior handles it extremely well and has still put up some ridiculous numbers so far this season. He has a somewhat long frame for a guard and is an excellent ball handler. He used this skill to carve through the Rocket defense all night and get into the lane, where finishing comes at ease when possessing the athletic ability of Patrick. He also proved to be a confident outside shooter by knocking three catch-and-shoot triples, two of which were extremely contested and he made over the top of his defender. On defense, he did an excellent job defending Brock Unger all night, holding him to just eight points and three in the first half. He also used fantastic instincts to jump into lanes and take away passes, a trait that he has improved on from year to year as a four year starter for the Jaguars. As one of the most under-the-radar players in all of Central Ohio, look for Patrick to garner much more attention once that first school makes an offer.

Marcus Stewart (6’2 WG / Wellington / 2021): Stewart had an excellent showing tonight and proved that he can be the secondary scoring option that the Jags need now that they are without junior big Elijah Meredith. He played a combination on the wing and as the lead ball handler, showing the positional versatility that will help him find a home at the next level. Marcus was elite tonight in one-on-one situations, constantly using his quick crossover and elite body control to get inside of the lane and finish around the rim. The trait that impressed us most from Stewart, however, was the outside shooting stroke that he put on display today. He knocked down three triples, one of which was a pull-up off movement. He does not look to take the outside shot as his first priority, but it is a tool that will help the young wing greatly in college. He also does a really good job of using both hands when other teams try to force him left, proving that he has good fluidity and natural coordination to his game. Finishing with 19 points tonight, look for the sophomore to continue to be talked about if he keeps putting out games like this.

Chase Oullette (6’4 WF / Wellington / 2022): An alum of The Intro back in late August, we were very pleased to see Oullette put together a solid outing tonight. Filling in the starting lineup due to the absence of Meredith, the freshman looked completely comfortable in the role, finishing with six points, seven rebounds and three steals. He has very promising size at 6-foot-4 and has exceptional length. Despite lacking strength, he used this to his advantage, grabbing seven rebounds on the night. On offense, he shows the confidence to put it on the deck and has a smooth outside stroke that we saw tonight when he knocked down a three to open the game. On the other end of the floor, he gave Berne Union problems all night by trapping them with his long frame. He still has a lot of development to do, but has loads of potential if he adds athleticism.
