Harvest Prep's CJ Anthony put on a dazzling 32 point performance to headline Monday's action

KETTERING, Ohio -- We finally got to see two area teams in Monday night's action at the Premier Health Flyin’ to the Hoop Classic and they did not disappoint, both coming out victorious. We also took in several other good games.

The results went as follows:

Dayton Thurgood Marshall 64, Pace Academy (GA) 56

Prolific Prep (CA) 94, SPIRE Academy 59

Marion Local 40, Cardinal Stritch 37

Hughes 83, Cleveland Heights 67

Harvest Prep 79, Madison 56

Pickerington Central 95, Trotwood-Madison 80

Let’s take a look at the day’s top performers.

CJ Anthony (6’0 CG / Harvest Prep / 2020): Anthony was no match for anyone on Madison’s defense on Monday night. He finished with a stat line of 32 points, four rebounds and three steals. He scored 18 of his points in style by knocking down six triples in the contest. CJ is one of the areas best three-point shooters and we really fell in love with his confidence shooting from beyond the arc tonight. When he drove downhill against the Madison defense, he had his way in getting to the rim. CJ is a wrecking ball when he’s headed to the lane and his strength combined with the momentum he gains going end-to-end make him hardly impossible for any guard in the area to stop when he’s going to the rim. On defense, he proved again today that he’s an excellent on ball defender with some of the quicker feet of any guard around. He gave Madison’s guards problems all night as he overmatched them with his athleticism on the perimeter. CJ currently holds several D-I offers and has the potential to be an excellent mid-major player at the next level.

Javohn Garcia (6’3 G / Pickerington Central / 2019): Javohn put on an all-around clinic in the final game of this years event by going for 32 points, seven rebounds four assists and four steals. Early on in the matchup it was evident that Trotwood-Madison wanted to play their usual up-tempo style, and this played right into Garcia’s favor. He consistently got out in transition where he was a matchup nightmare for anyone when he got a head of steam going. Standing at 6-foot-3, Garcia also has excellent finishing ability around the rim that is thanks large in part to his long wingspan. He knocked down two three-pointers in the game as well, showing off his confident outside stroke. Whether it was in the half-court or in the open floor, “JG” was a nightmare for anyone on the Trotwood roster to stay in front of and this found himself shooting an alarming 16 free throws. He was extremely efficeient at the stripe, going 14-for-16. He gave Trotwood’s guards problems all night on defense whether it was in the full or half-court. Garcia did this by using his long frame and athleticism to cause turnovers. One of the best unsigned seniors in the state, tonight was just another day at the office for Javohn, who is sure to be a low/mid-major D-I guy come next fall.

Garner Wallace (6’5 WF / Pickerington Central / 2021): Now that Pickerington Central is without seniors Jay Rodgers and Sam Towns due to the new OHSAA transfer rule, the Tigers need some players to step up in big ways. Wallace did just that tonight, going for a career-high 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists.Garner put together this performance by going an impressive 10-for-15 from the floor. He shot this high rate by generating easy looks around the rim either from teammates creating, himself creating, or by cleaning up the glass. Garner is a very promising athlete standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 175 pounds. He has the perfect mix of speed and strength, allowing him to excel on both the block and the wing at the high school level. He’s a very good leaper as well which allows him to stay involved on the glass, especially when he is at a height disadvantage. On defense, he can be a valuable asset to any team as he defends well on both the perimeter and on the block, a testament to his duo of strength and quickness. Tonight was the breakout game of the sophomore’s young career, and we look forward to watching him continue to grow and put together impressive outings like this one.

Brandon Beavers (6’2 PG / Harvest Prep / 2019): As one of the area’s most improved players the last two seasons, Beavers was really able to put all of his tools on display in Monday’s matchup with Madison. He has lightning quick end-to-end speed and is undoubtedly one of the fastest guards in the area. He generated many points for himself and others by creating turnovers on the perimeter. This ultimately led to easy looks for the Warriors all night in transition. Beavers created these turnovers by keeping the Madison guards in front of him and creating frantic trouble, often times by trapping with a teammate. He knocked down one three-pointer as well and it was clearly a display of his smooth, confident stroke. He also did a good job of showing his quick release, a trait that will help him loads at the next level. We also like the stop and start movements that Brandon used to get by defenders today. For any mid/low-major D-II program in need of an athletic guard, look no further than Beavers.

Nimari Burnett (6’3 WG / Prolific Prep / 2020): In a game that sold out because people wanted to LaMelo Ball and SPIRE Academy, Burnett stole the show on Monday afternoon. Finishing with a dominant showing of 34 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals, he led the way for a bit 94-59 Prolific Prep victory over SPIRE. He knocked down six three-pointers and also scored around the rim and by slashing through the lane. Burnett is the #43 (247sports) player in the 2020 class, and currently holds offers from 14 schools, including Ohio State, Arizona State and USC. It was very enjoyable to watch Burnett torch the SPIRE defense this afternoon, and we look forward to watching him at the next level, regardless of school choice.

Grant Whisman (6’7 WG/WF / Madison / 2020): Grant really caught our eye tonight for a Madison team that was simply overmatched athletically against Harvest Prep. He’s a long, fast athlete who looks for the part of a tight end. Whisman finished off the game against the Warriors with 20 points and five rebounds. He shot a highly efficient 8-for-12 from the field, including three triples, and was practically the only way the Mohawks could create good looks tonight. He has promising length at 6-foot-7 and shoots a confident perimeter jumper that he never looks afraid or uncomfortable in shooting. He also scored on several soft-touch floaters, a trait that was needed against a long and athletic frontcourt of Harvest Prep. The junior does not hold any offers currently, but could be a solid mid-major D-II player. Look for the junior to continue to put up goof numbers all the way out in Middletown.
