Lions put five in double figures to rout visiting Braves

BALTIMORE, Ohio -- In a MSL-Buckeye matchup, Liberty Union (7-7) used a 29-point first quarter outburst to defeat visiting Logan Elm (6-7), 77-62.

The Lions came out of the gate doing just about everything right on Friday. Liberty Union shot 11 of 15 from the field in the first, finding the open man on almost every possession. Defensively, their pressure allowed for no easy looks for the Braves leading to a 29-7 advantage heading into the second frame.

Despite outscoring the host 18-5 in the second quarter, Logan Elm trailed 44-25 heading into the intermission. The third stanza was played even with Liberty Union having a 58-39 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Midway through the final frame, Logan Elm pulled within 14 points, but big play after big play allowed the Lions to keep a comfortable lead. Liberty Union eventually cruised to a 77-62 win over the Braves, thanks in large part to double-figure scoring from five Liberty Union players.

Senior forward Wyatt Sims led the Lions with a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Sims was joined in double figures by senior guard Caleb Shook (15 points), senior guard Jaidon Billingsley (10 points), junior guard Jared Ison (10 points), and senior guard Hunter Antritt (10 points). Billingsley also contributed seven assists, playing a solid floor game for the Lions.

Sophomore combo guard Isaac Ward had a team-high 17 points, including three triples, for the Braves. Senior forward Luke Watson followed with 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore point guard Jeremy Wietelmann also contributed 13 points in the loss.

The Lions continue league play on Tuesday at Hamilton Township and Saturday at home versus Teays Valley. Liberty Union has won seven out of their last eight and sits in 5th place of the MSL-Buckeye.

Logan Elm looks to bounce back against Linsly in the Route 40 Classic today at Muskingum. The Braves currently stand in 4th place of the MSL-Buckeye and resume league play on Tuesday when they host Fairfield Union.

Wyatt Sims (6’4 PF/ Liberty Union/ 2019): Sims led all scorers with 20 points to go along with seven rebounds on Friday. The 6-foot-4 power forward brought the energy on both ends tonight. Whenever Sims got the ball in the high post, he showed his ability to put ball down and bulldoze his way through the Logan Elm defense. Not only can Sims finish at the rim, he also proved to be an efficient shooter, knocking down several mid-range jumpers. Sims also controlled the boards and showed to be an excellent rim protector, tallying three blocks. Wyatt is another player capable of having a big game on any given night for the Lions.

Isaac Ward (5’9 G / Logan Elm / 2021): Isaac Ward was the offensive catalyst Friday for Logan Elm finishing with 17 points. Despite a slow offensive start, the sophomore was aggressive all night scoring 11 of his 17 in the first half. The 5-foot-9 guard proved that he can be dangerous off the bounce and from beyond the arc while being face-guarded. He knocked down three three-pointers and finished at the rim several times. Isaac is a shifty guard who showed off his tight handles and pure stroke throughout the entire night. With the sophomore backcourt of sophomores Ward, Gabe Chalfin, Jeremy Wietelmann, and Jason Sailor, the Braves are in good hands in the coming years.

Luke Watson (6’4 PF / Logan Elm / 2019): The 6-foot-4 senior Watson proved he may be one of the most efficient players in Pickaway County. Friday, Watson finished with 14 points on six-of-six from the field including 5 rebounds. Watson showed off his ability to finish and get position on the block. The duo of guard Jeremy Wietelmann and big Watson in the pick-and-roll will be a key factor to Logan Elm’s success in the future due to Wietelmann’s vision and Watson’s ability to finish at the rim.
