Youngstown State's Jelani Simmons had a big week last week

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Another week has come and gone, and some of the college players from Columbus had very big weeks. Let’s see who performed well this past week.

Taevion Kinsey (Eastmoor/Marshall)- We talked last week about how Kinsey was finally starting to get the recognition he deserved, and he didn’t disappoint on Saturday. He scored 23 points and had 7 rebounds against Western Kentucky, a team that could feature a few future NBA prospects, and helped Marshall win 70-69. The Thundering Herd have established themselves as the top team in CUSA, and Kinsey is a big reason why. Since joining the starting lineup, Kinsey is averaging 16 points and six rebounds per game.

Jelani Simmons (Beechcroft/Youngstown State)- Simmons once again showed why he has star written all over him this week. He only had 5 points on Saturday, but he started his week off with a big 18-point, 5-rebound performance. He’s also shooting 41 percent from 3 right now, a fantastic mark for a freshman. I really like this kid and his future. Between Simmons and fellow freshman Darius Quisenberry, the future is bright for Jarrod Calhoun’s Penguins.

Nick Ward (Gahanna/Michigan State)- Nick Ward continued his fantastic play again this week. He had 16 points and 9 rebounds in a win over Purdue and followed that up with 16 points and 11 rebounds against Penn State. With Josh Langford being out with an injury, Ward has had a much bigger role and has thrived. This will only help Sparty as they continue to improve week-by-week.

Nick Muszynski (St. Charles/Belmont)- Muszynski was fantastic this week for the Bruins. On Thursday he had 20 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists against Morehead State. He followed that up with 14 points and 9 rebounds against Eastern Kentucky. Belmont plays Jacksonville State Thursday, the only team to beat them in the OVC so far. Nick struggled in that game, but if plays to his averages Belmont should get the victory.

Onno Steger (Upper Arlington/Western Carolina)- Steger had one of the bigger weeks for the Columbus-based athletes. He had 10 points against Mercer and 14 points and 8 rebounds against The Citadel. He’s just short of double-figures right now, averaging 9.7 PPG. Steger has been very solid for the Catamounts all year.

Northern Kentucky Norse - Jalen Tate (Pickerington Central) continued his fantastic play for the Norse again on Friday in a matchup between two of the better teams in the Horizon League. He had 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in the Norse’s 68-64 win. Tate is now averaging 13.3 PPG and 4.8 RPG.

Dane Goodwin (Upper Arlington/Notre Dame)- Goodwin played a season-high 37 minutes against Boston College, a game Notre Dame won 69-66. He had 9 points and 3 rebounds, including five straight points to put Notre Dame up 11, but his big play of the day was a steal at the end of the game to secure the first ACC win for the Fighting Irish.

Braden Norris (Hilliard Bradley/Oakland)- Norris had a quiet week for the Golden Grizzlies, but even his quiet weeks still haven’t been quiet. He had 9 points and 7 assists against Milwaukee, a tough 3-point loss. He was held scoreless against Green Bay, but he still dished out 6 assists and had 4 rebounds. He’s also still shooting 58 percent from 3.

Ohio Bobcats - Jason Carter and Doug Taylor both had solid weeks for the Bobcats. Carter finally found his range from 3, going 5-7 against Bowling Green in a tough loss. He finished with 22 points and 6 rebounds. On Saturday, against a sneaky-good Ball State, he had 13 points and 9 rebounds and helped Ohio upset the Cardinals. Taylor only had 4 points and 3 rebounds against Bowling Green, but he did have 11 points and 7 rebounds in their second game.

Ohio State Buckeyes - The Buckeyes struggled in their road games against Iowa and Rutgers this week. Kaleb Wesson continued to battle foul trouble but had 18 points and 7 rebounds against Rutgers. He only had 2 points against Iowa though. Andre Wesson did have 13 points against Iowa, but he had 4 points and 4 turnovers against Rutgers. Both will have to bounce back on Friday against a very good Maryland team with two NBA-caliber big guys.

Javon Bess (Gahanna/Saint Louis)- Bess struggled from the field this week, but Saint Louis still won both their games. He had 8 points against UMass and 11 against LaSalle, but it didn’t matter because the Billikens won both games. That should make other A10 teams a little nervous, because once he gets going again they should become the best team in the conference.

Antoine Smith (Westerville South/Incarnate Word)- Smith had a solid game in a tough loss to Sam Houston State on Saturday. He was only able to score 4 points, but he did grab 12 rebounds, a season high.

Caden Sanchez (DeSales/High Point)- Sanchez had a solid week for the Panthers as they split their games between Presbyterian and Winthrop. He had 4 points and 3 rebounds in both games this week, and High Point has looked like they could be a contender in the Big South this year.

Josh Gantz (Bishop Ready/UMass-Lowell)- Gantz had a decent week for the River Hawks and helped lead them to a victory over UMBC. He had 10 points and 6 rebounds in a loss to New Hampshire before posting 8 points against UMBC. He’s currently averaging 11.6 PPG and 4.1 RPG.

Matt Moyer (Gahanna/Vanderbilt)- Things looked promising for Vanderbilt this week against Kentucky, but they couldn’t execute enough down the stretch to get the win. Moyer did have 7 points against the Wildcats though. He had 5 points against Georgia earlier in the week, another tough loss. Without Garland, Vanderbilt has really struggled.

Khalil Iverson (Delaware Hayes/Wisconsin)- It was another tough week for Badger fans. Carsen Edwards scored 36 points and helped Purdue knock off the Badgers. Iverson did have 7 points and 5 rebounds, but something seems off about Wisconsin. They have Maryland tonight, a game that could help turn their season around if they win.
