Brady Snyder's game winning three helps Canal stay perfect at 10-0

CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio-- The Chillicothe Cavaliers traveled to Canal  Winchester on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup. After a back and forth fourth quarter, Canal would stay unbeaten, taking down the Cavaliers 70-67.

Juniors Jayvon Maughmer and Brandon Noel were the driving force for the Cavaliers from the opening tip, combining for 17 of their teams 20 points in the first quarter. The duo gave the Cavaliers a 20-16 cushion heading into the second frame.

The rest of the Cavaliers team furthered their momentum by applying pressure on defense to come up with steals and easy fast break points. Canal struggled to keep up and faced a 12 point deficit heading into the locker room at halftime.

Canal came out of halftime firing on all cylinders, outscoring the Cavaliers 25-8 in the third quarter. This surge was led by senior Brady Snyder, who had 12 points in the quarter.

After a fourth quarter full of lead changes and momentum swings, Canal headed into the final two minutes of the game with a 62-60 lead. A tip-in soon after the two minute mark from wing forward Cole Metzler gave the Indians a two possession lead.

However, Chillicothe refused to go away, as junior forward Vincent Roper finished a layup through contact and made his way to the line, where he failed to convert on the and-one opportunity.

With a little over a minute remaining, Bilal Sow hit a big three point basket to stretch the Indians lead to five points. The Cavaliers kept their composure, as Tre Beard drove baseline, drawing a foul and converting on an and-one opportunity to trim the Indians lead to two. The Cavaliers quickly regained possession, and Maughmer was able to score on a put back with 24 seconds remaining on the clock.

With the game tied at 67, Brady Snyder dribbled down the floor as Canal attempted to hold the ball for the final shot. With a four seconds left Snyder sunk a contested three-pointer that gave his Indians a 70-67 lead with two seconds left, ultimately ending up being the game winning shot for the Indians.

This win moves Canal Winchester to a perfect 10-0 heading into a big time OCC-Capital matchup with Newark (11-1) on Friday. The Wildcats come into the game boasting a 24 game conference winning streak, but Snyder and the Indians will look to change that.

Brady Snyder (6’1 PG / Canal Winchester / 2019): The senior does a little bit of everything for the Indians. Snyder finished with a game high 28 points in wednesday nights contest. The senior is a prolific scorer who can run the floor all game long. His speed allows him to drive past his defenders for layups, and he also has a very quick pull up jumper that allows him to score easy buckets off of the dribble. With time winding down in the game Canal knew they had to keep the ball in Snyder’s hands, as he rose up for the three point shot and delivered the dagger with two seconds left on the clock for the Cavaliers, who now trailed by three to make an attempt at a buzzer beater to send it into overtime. To my suprise, the 6-foot-1 guard has yet to receive his first offer. Snyder should begin to receive interest from D-III and low-major D-II schools in the near future.

Jayvon Maughmer (6’4 WF /  Chillicothe / 2020): Maughmer is a very athletic wing forward with a high basketball IQ, great court vision, and solid ball handling which makes him tough to guard. He was especially difficult to guard in Wednesday nights game when he got into the middle of the paint, where he often relied on his spin move to free himself from contact, finishing off more than a few possessions on easy layups for the Cavaliers. The senior was responsible for a bulk of Chillicothe’s points with seven assists and 24 points of his own.

Bilal Sow (6’4 PF / Canal Winchester / 2019): Sow is an athletic big whose post moves are difficult to guard, and his defensive presence causes problems for opposing players to score in the paint. The junior showed up in a big way for Canal Winchester in Wednesday night’s contest against Chillicothe. The six-foot-four power forward uses his long wingspan to poke at ball handlers and protect the paint. In his matchup with the Cavaliers he was able to come up with three blocks and two steals. He was just as effective on the offensive end, scoring in the post with ease and even stepping out for a few three-pointers, where he made two. He finished the night with 22 points in the win.

Brandon Noel (6’7 C / Chillicothe / 2020): In my first viewing of Noel I was impressed with his athleticism and his ability to space out the floor. Scoring all of his points in the first half, the junior helped Chillicothe go into halftime with a double-digit lead. During the first half Noel was extremely hard for defenders to stop as he was hitting threes and scoring inside at a very high level. Noel’s biggest play of the game was his posterizing slam coming at the end of a Cavaliers fastbreak. Noel is definitely a big man to keep an eye on in the class of 2020.

Tre Beard (5’9 PG / Chillicothe / 2020): The junior guard finished the game with 17 points and a pair of assists. The undersized guard showcased his ability to score anywhere on the floor. Beard has a tight handle and a quick first step that allows him to be effective in the lane. The point guard showed a high level of composure at the end of the game as he took good care of the ball and converted on some big shots.

Cole Metzler (6’5 WF / Canal Winchester / 2020): The junior finished Wednesday’s game with a double-double, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds on the night. The junior primarily operates inside on both ends of the floor. Metzler gave his team a fair number of second chance opportunities throughout the game, as Chillicothe had a difficult time keeping off of the offensive glass all night. Metzler is a guy for Division III and NAIA programs to keep an eye on over the next year and a half.
