Strong third quarter helps Jaguars stay perfect at 7-0

WESTERVILLE, Ohio-- In the area’s biggest game on Thursday night, Hilliard Bradley received their toughest yet, but took down Westerville North, winning 61-53.

Jumping out to an early 7-0 lead to start the game, Westerville North controlled all of the momentum in this contest. After a back-and-forth second quarter of play, senior guard Jeremiah Keene banked in a very deep three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Wildcats a 24-21 lead heading into the locker room.

Hilliard Bradley would not panic, however. The Jaguars used a 18-9 third quarter to jump out in front heading into the final frame. Sophomore guard AJ Mirgon had eight points for the Jaguars in the quarter, providing them with the spark plug they had been searching for all night.

Westerville North would not shy away though, as they shrunk the Bradley lead to as little as 39-37 with 6:18 to go in the game.

Hilliard Bradley then showed why they are one of the best teams in area this season by doing all of the little things right to close out the win. The Jags converted on nearly every attempt they saw at the line in the fourth quarter, helping them pull this one out.

Junior Chris Mayfield led Hilliard Bradley with 19 points and seven rebounds, followed up by Mirgon with 14 points. Junior guard Matt Allocco also chipped in, scoring 13 points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out six assists. This win moves the Jags to 7-0 on the season before they see conference foe Delaware Hayes on January 4th.

Keene led the way for Westerville North with 17 points. He was followed up by senior forward Philip Alston with 15 points. Junior Chase Perkins also contributed nine points for the Warriors, who now set their sights to a January 4th date with Ed Calo and Westerville South.

Chris Mayfield

Chris Mayfield (6’3 WF/ Hilliard Bradley/ 2020): Though he is a Division 1 football prospect on the gridiron, Mayfield is no slouch on the hardwood. Easily one of the area’s strongest players, Mayfield used his bruising frame to get to the rim and finish all night tonight, finishing with 19 points and seven rebounds. Despite his strong, wide frame, Mayfield displays a finishing ability that you would not expect to see out of many players who possess his size. When he gets in and around the rim, you may be surprised at what comes next. If he doesn’t lay it in though, you might even see a monster slam from the freak athlete. Chris is a bully in the paint on both ends of the ball, and it is evident when Hilliard Bradley plays. With the loss of sophomore Jack Pugh to injury, look for Mayfield to step in and play a bigger role than expected this season.

AJ Mirgon (5’11 G/ Hilliard Bradley/ 2021): Despite having what seemed like a quiet 15 points, Mirgon made his mark felt in several other ways tonight as well. One of the top sophomore guards in area, AJ has a great team-first play style that suits Hilliard Bradley perfectly. A very confident lead guard, Mirgon can score by both getting in the lane and knocking down the outside shot. With Westerville North in a 2-3 zone for most of the night, Mirgon showed off his smooth stroke, knocking down a trio of three-pointers. It was his eight point third quarter which ultimately put Bradley in the driver's seat for the rest of the night, as his teammates freed him up for several open looks. Mirgon is also an exceptional defender on the perimeter, using quick feet and good instincts to make several key plays for the Jags tonight. As his game continues to mature, Mirgon will garner more and more attention.

Jeremiah Keene

Jeremiah Keene (6’1 G/ Westerville North/ 2019): One of the top unsigned seniors in the area, Keene had a solid outing tonight, scoring 17 points to lead the way for the Warriors. Being face guarded all night by Allocco, Jeremiah had to work for every bucket he got, making this showing much more impressive. Keene is extremely fast, especially off of the dribble. He has a great package of dribble moves to create his own shot, a deadly weapon when combined with his speed. Keene also has a very good build for a guard, as he has a great combination of speed, quickness and strength. This build also gives him the ability to defend both wing players and point guards, which is a very valuable skill at the next level. Keene currently holds four Division 1 offers, and will look to make this number grow as the season goes on.

Philip Alston (6’5 WF/ Westerville North/ 2019): A physically gifted player standing at 6’5 and displaying a nice build, Alston put together a good performance tonight, scoring 15 points. The second option on a Warriors team who needs scoring outside of Keene, Philip provided exactly that tonight. Alston grabbed two offensive rebounds and converted them, but did a lot of his scoring by shooting the mid-range and also knocking down the three pointer. Also providing a paint presence on defense, he was able to block a pair of shots. Alston currently holds several Division 2 offers and one Division 1 offer, and is sure draw more attention playing the Warriors this season.
