Ontario uses big second half to push past River Valley on the road

CALEDONIA, Ohio -- Two big middle quarters from Joe Balogh’s Ontario squad were enough for the Warriors to snag a road win on Wednesday night, defeating River Valley 65-57 in MOAC league play. Shaquan Coburn led the way for the Warriors with 18 points, while River Valley’s AJ Kenney led all scorers with 27.

In the first quarter, the Vikings got out to an eight point lead behind the stud forward Kenney, as he had 11 points and seven rebounds to get the Vikings off and running during the opening eight minutes. The second quarter was a different story as Ontario’s Coburn came alive, connecting on three three-pointers in the period, helping tie the score at 29 all at the half.

Ontario maintained some breathing room in the third quarter, as they carried a seven-point lead to the final quarter. River Valley was able to tie the game in the fourth, but Warrior guards Griffin Shaver and Kolten Kurtz came alive from three-point land to help pace Ontario down the stretch. Kenney had 12 more points in the quarter, but the late rally would fall short as the Warriors move to 3-0 in MOAC play.

AJ Kenney (6’5 PF / River Valley / 2019): River Valley’s go-to player Kenney was dominant on Wednesday night, as the big man was extremely efficient from the floor and was a force on the boards. Doing pretty much whatever he wanted all night, AJ had 27 points, 23 of which came in the first and fourth combined, and added in 16 rebounds. Kenney also plays the defensive side well, getting numerous blocks. The senior has the tools that D3 schools and JUCOs should take notice of.

Shaquan Coburn (6’2 G / Ontario / 2020): Shaquan is a streaky lefty shooter, and can definitely fill it up in a hurry. Totaling 18 points tonight, the lengthy guard was a force in the first half. The junior can rise above and get just about any shot he wants on the court. Coburn needs to improve his ball handling but should keep improving under his last two years at Ontario.

Kolten Kurtz (5’10 G / Ontario / 2021): The sophomore Kurtz can flat out shoot it with the best of them. In my second viewing of the sharpshooting guard he racked up 17 points and was deadly from three point range, knocking in five deep ones. Kurtz has supreme confidence in his shot, and size is not a factor as he makes it known and will shoot over anyone with just a little space.

Griffin Shaver (6’1 CG / Ontario / 2021): Second time seeing Shaver on the hardwood, and he is a flat out floor general. The 6-foot-1 guard set his teammates up all night in good position, always making the right play. Shaver has a smooth release and knocked in a couple threes, also going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. The sophomore is a two-way player as he will pick a guy up full court and make you work for everything, coming up with a couple steals tonight as well. Shaver has a high basketball IQ, and can play well on or off ball, certainly a player to watch in the coming years.
