Elijah Thomas and Gahanna took down Westerville South on Monday

GAHANNA, Ohio -- Westerville South traveled to Gahanna on Monday in a game that displayed some of the best guard play from around Columbus. Gahanna had the upper hand in the end, knocking down clutch shots and free throws in the second half to come away with a 65-57 win.

Both teams came out playing very high tempo, resulting in a great deal of turnovers and points. Westerville South senior guard Ryan Greggs had a big first quarter on both sides of the ball, knocking down threes and helping the Wildcats build a 19-18 lead after a quarter of play.

The pace of play slowed down significantly in the second quarter, as both teams focused more on ball movement and not settling for bad shots, which led to a 30-30 tie at the break.

Gahanna began to pull away in the third quarter, led by the backcourt trio of Nate Stiab, Elijah Thomas and Sean Jones. To combat Gahanna’s run, Westerville South went into a full court press on defense. However, the Gahanna freshman sensation Jones was able to consistently break the press with his tight handle and quick feet.

Westerville South began to heat up in the fourth quarter, but for every big shot hit by Jordan McMillan or any other Wildcat guard, Gahanna seemed to answer right back with a big shot of their own. In the end the Lions got the best of the Wildcats, winning the game 65-57.

Thomas led all scorers with 20 points. Jones added 16, while Staib rounded out the double digit scorers for Gahanna with 10 points. For Westerville South, the Wildcats were led by McMillian’s 19 points, while Greggs added 16 points.

Let’s take a look at some of the top unsigned seniors from the game.

Elijah Thomas (6’2 CG / Gahanna / 2019): Thomas has been producing at a very high level in Josh Corbin’s absence.  With Jones being the primary ball handler for Gahanna, Thomas plays a lot off the ball, which has helped him take his scoring to the next level. Thomas is a lights out shooter who excels off movement, as he and Jones have turned into one of the better guard duos anywhere in the area. The senior has been one of the area's top scorers so far this year, averaging 21.4 points per game. The senior continues to add tools to his offensive game, scoring in a variety of ways over the course of Monday’s game. If or when Josh Corbin returns, Thomas, Corbin, and Jones will give opposing backcourts nightmares.

Ryan Greggs (6’2 CG / Westerville South / 2019): Greggs is one of the most improved players in the class of 2019. The 6-foot-2 senior has a well rounded offensive game and is a very physical defender. Greggs played an amazing first quarter, knocking down shots from behind the arc, making plays on defense and scoring in transition. His movement off the ball allowed him to create space for him to score. Greggs is one of the best combo guards in the area when he plays with a chip on his shoulder like he did in the first quarter.

Jordan McMillian (6’1 CG / Westerville South / 2019): Despite picking up his fourth foul midway through the fourth quarter, McMillan was still able to be very effective for the rest of the game. McMillian was constantly knocking down his shots from long range on Monday, making him extremely difficult to guard. The senior doesn’t take plays off, even when he found himself in foul trouble he played smart and solid defense. McMillian has an old school feel to his game, as he is really effective with his mid-range shooting, but also has shown an ability to hit shots from three-point range, as well as having the ability to get by defenders to the rim. The 6-foot-1 guard can play either spot in the back court, while also being a true two-way player. McMillian is a prospect to keep an eye on in the OCC-Buckeye this year.
