Senior forward Jacob Drees and Christian Gillilan lead Hilliard Davidson over Bishop Watterson

CLINTONVILLE, Ohio -- In a matchup between two programs who like to play a similar style of game, Hilliard Davidson muscled their way past Bishop Watterson on Tuesday night, 50-41.

Davidson jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, and they did not back after that. Taking a 28-21 lead into the locker at halftime, Davidson was primarily led by towering senior forwards Christian Gillilan and Jacob Drees, who got plenty of great looks at the rim. Both standing at 6-foot-7, the two got  inside with ease, also converting on several second chance opportunities.

Watterson made a quick run coming out of the gate in the second half, this coming off of several good looks from senior guard Zach Sawyer. The Eagles trimmed the margin to as little as four, as they found themselves trailing 31-27 with 4:41 to play in the quarter.

Unfortunately for Watterson, their momentum was crushed when Drees knocked down a big time three pointer for Davidson in the waning moments of the third quarter, opening up a 40-32 lead going into the final frame. The Wildcats rode this momentum all the way through the finish line, as a three pointer from Gillilan proved to be the dagger in the 50-41 victory.

Gillilan was the game MVP, leading the way for Davidson with 19 points and five rebounds. Drees also was a major contributor, notching a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. They were followed up by senior wing guard Carson Felicetty, who chipped in 14 points. This was a very impressive win for Davidson, who looks to gear up for a long season of OCC play.

Sawyer led the way for Watterson with 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists, doing a little bit of everything for the Eagles. Sophomore forward Davis Boone tallied 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Senior forward Jimmy Patton also had six points. Watterson played a good game tonight, but were ultimately overmatched by a very long Davidson team. The Eagles will look to bounce back this Friday against CCL foe DeSales.

Christian Gillilan (6’7 F/ Hilliard Davidson/ 2019): In my first viewing of Gillilan, I was very intrigued with his length and ability to shoot the ball just by watching him in warmups. He proved that he was real deal during the game as well, going for a game-high 19 points, pulling down five rebounds and blocking two shots. Gillilan has a very good build lengthwise, standing at 6-foot-7 and having very long arms. He uses this to his advantage, blocking shots on defense, as well as creating easy looks around the rim on offense. Gillilan has the ability to stretch the floor, as he knocked down a pair of catch and shoot three pointers. Though he is a already a senior, Gillilan could be a good piece to a Division III program in need of a forward. If he can put on a little bit of weight, he has the potential to be a very effective scorer in multiple ways.

Carson Felicetty (6’2 WG/ Hilliard Davidson/ 2019): Felicetty came up with what seemed to be a quiet 14 point performance tonight, making several key plays for the Wildcats. Practically all of Felicetty’s were off of jump shots tonight, but he was able to make them in a variety of different ways. Felicetty also hit a three, as well as making several mid range jumpers and jump shots around the rim. Showing the ability to shoot off the dribble and off the catch, which are both key for a wing who is looking to contribute, Felicetty put together a solid all-around performance on the offensive end. If Davidson wants compete with the powerhouses this season, players like Felicetty will need to step up more often.

Jacob Drees (6’7 F/ Hilliard Davidson/ 2019): As expected, Drees was the focal point of the Wildcats game plan tonight, and had an impressive showing in his double-double performance. For more on Drees, take a look at Friday’s scouting report.

Zach Sawyer (6’1 PG/ Bishop Watterson/ 2019): Sawyer was the engine that made the Watterson offense run tonight, finishing with a statline of 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sawyer plays with a great pace, which is a very useful tool when combined with his IQ. Sawyer displayed great court vision all night, making several great passes in transition and to cutters in the lane. He also was able to show off a very nice mid range jumpshot, and we already know that he can bury the three. Zach is one of the more underrated point guards in the 2019 class, and could pick up some major attention this season after making a name for himself last year.

Davis Boone (6’3 WF/ Bishop Watterson/ 2021): Boone impressed again tonight, as he put together another solid stat line of 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. For more on Boone, take a look at last Tuesday’s scouting report.
