South took down Walnut Ridge in controversial fashion on Tuesday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There is one word to describe Tuesday's City League showdown between South and Walnut Ridge - controversial.

In what appeared to be a big-time win for Walnut Ridge on the road, controversy struck 1160 Ann Street. As Scots junior guard Qian Magwood scored a go-ahead bucket with just under eight seconds to go, South looked dead in the water on Tuesday.

As junior Taquan Simington missed a three-point field goal with three seconds remaining, Walnut Ridge rushed the floor as if the game had been won. However, just milliseconds prior, South junior Marcus Johnson connected on a floater in the lane with 0.2 seconds remaining.

With Walnut Ridge's players rushing the floor celebrating what they thought was a victory, South's coaches were pleading with the officials to reverse what appeared to be a Scots win.

The ruling worked in South's favor, as Johnson's game-tying attempt was counted good, sending Tuesday's slugfest into overtime.

In the overtime period, South had the upper hand, as senior guard Tre Watkins scored nine of his team-high 25 points after regulation. Watkins knocked down a huge three a minute into the period, which put the Bulldogs ahead 68-67.

From that point forward, Walnut Ridge never led again, as clutch free throw shooting from Watkins and his teammates closed out Tuesday's matchup.

Walnut Ridge led by as much as four points with 30 seconds to go, however, a sloppy possession late allowed South to get back into the game.

Watkins led the Bulldogs with 25 points, scoring 19 of which after halftime. Junior guard Trevell Adams had the best game of his career off the bench, coming in early due to foul trouble from Simington, finishing with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals.

Johnson added 14 points and eight rebounds, with no two points bigger than the ones that tied the game at the buzzer. Senior forward Alvin Byrd had a solid game, scoring six points in the first quarter to finish with nine on the game.

Simington added seven points, while junior power forward Samual Barton finished with four points, eight rebounds and two assists.

For Walnut Ridge, Davis powered the Scots with 35 points and seven rebounds. The 6-foot-5 forward was unstoppable around the basket, putting the entire South front court in foul trouble and finishing through contact all game long.

Junior forward Kaveon Ross had his breakout game, finishing with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Ross dominated around the basket, providing great energy on both ends as he played all 36 minutes on Tuesday.

Outside of the front court duo, Walnut Ridge's guards combined for just 17 points, with Magwood leading the way with seven points. Magwood fouled out midway through overtime, as Walnut Ridge struggled to handle the ball without its stud junior.

With the win, South still controls its own destiny in the City League South. The Bulldogs will have to go undefeated in the division in order to make it back to the City Championship. For Walnut Ridge, the Scots drop its first game of the year, however, they will only have to beat South once in order to win the division.

Von Cameron Davis (6'5 WF / Walnut Ridge / 2020): Davis was absolutely outstanding on Tuesday, going for a game-high 35 points and seven rebounds. The junior forward could not be contained around the basket, finishing through contact and giving the Scots all he had on Tuesday. Davis even knocked in a three from the corner in overtime, giving the Scots one last shot at the win as the lead was trimmed to just a single bucket. Averaging north of 35 points per game so far this season, Davis has been the most dominant player in the area and will have to continue to have performances like these in order for the Scots to reach the lofty goals that they've set for themselves this season.

Tre Watkins (6'0 CG / South / 2019): Seniors make plays in big games. Especially seniors that have been there before. For Watkins, he has been part of some big-time games in his career, however, his performance on Tuesday might have been his best yet. Going for 25 points, Watkins delivered countless times in the second half on Tuesday, scoring nine of South's 13 points in overtime and scoring 19 of his 25 after halftime. A big-time shot maker who has never lacked for confidence, Watkins hit two threes in the second half, including one in overtime that gave South the lead for good. Watkins should have every single junior college offer in Ohio, as he is as good as they come in the City League at creating offense on the perimeter.

Kaveon Ross (6'5 PF / Walnut Ridge / 2020): Ross had his breakout game of the season so far, going for 22 points and 15 rebounds. Ross played all 36 minutes, providing the Scots with energy and toughness on the interior. The 6-foot-5 big man banged for rebounds in the post, finished through traffic and gave the Scots a much-needed boost outside of Davis. Running the floor and providing great effort on both ends, Ross had the type of performance that will take this team to the next level. A Division I football prospect, Ross is improving as a basketball prospect and will continue to shine as he becomes more comfortable with his new teammates.

Trevell Adams (6'0 PG / South / 2020): Coming off the bench on Tuesday, Adams had the game of his career thus far, giving South a huge boost on both ends of the floor. Scoring 10 of his 15 points in the first half, Adams converted a few tough floaters in the lane, blocking two shots of Magwood's near the rim and gave South the type of minutes that win big games like Tuesday's. Playing his most consistent game yet, Adams showed the type of big-time upside that he has possessed since he enrolled at South. If the junior guard can continue to play at that level, South will be a threat to make it out of the region in Division II this winter with the type of defense the Bulldogs play.

Marcus Johnson (6'4 WG / South / 2020): Playing two of the best games in his career to begin the season, Johnson made the biggest shot of his life on Tuesday. Never giving up on the play, Johnson's attention to detail and clutch floater tied Tuesday's contest, sending it into overtime where the Bulldogs hung on tight. The 6-foot-4 wing is as athletic as they come in the City League and scored nine of his 14 points after halftime. While he may have forced a few looks early, Johnson's hustle and energy on the defensive end created a few turnovers late that ultimately led to South winning the game. Adding more skill to his perimeter game, Johnson is beginning to evolve into a true wing guard who has what it takes to play at the Division I level.
