Walnut Ridge junior Von Cameron Davis went for 33 points and 10 rebounds in a tough road win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Coming out in a packed in zone defense, Bishop Watterson was hoping to control tempo, control the glass and force visiting Walnut Ridge to knock down shots from the perimeter.

Unfortunately for the host Eagles, Walnut Ridge junior Von Cameron Davis was not in for a letdown game after going for a school-record 46 points on Saturday. Davis set the tone early, knocking down back-to-back threes to begin the game, as the super junior finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds in a 66-54 win for Walnut Ridge on the road.

Bishop Watterson competed all game long, tying the game early in the third quarter behind the play of senior guard Zach Sawyer. While Sawyer knocked down plenty of shots to keep the Eagles competitive, Watterson simply had no matchup for Davis, who scored 21 of his 33 points after halftime, converting five three-point plays and knocking down all 11 attempts at the free-throw line.

Leading 44-37 after the third quarter, Walnut Ridge extended the lead in the final frame, as Davis scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone. The dominance of Davis, along with stellar three-point shooting for Walnut Ridge was the story of the game as the Scots knocked down nine threes on the night.

Outside of Davis, senior guard Meech Coble finished with 14 points, knocking down four threes. No other player scored in double figures, however, junior guard Qian Magwood did an excellent job facilitating, as he finished with 10 assists.

For Watterson, Sawyer led all scorers with 20 points. Scoring on all three levels, Sawyer hit some tough shots and handled the ball very well against tight pressure from Walnut Ridge's athletic guards.

Sophomore forward Davis Boone added 13 points for the Eagles, playing a very solid game on the wing and in the post. Junior guard Chris Crane finished in double figures with 11 points off the bench for Watterson.

Walnut Ridge will look to improve to 3-0 on Saturday against Olentangy Orange before taking on South a week from now.

Bishop Watterson gets a tough matchup on Friday against division rival Bishop Hartley in an early season test to decide who will reign atop the Central Catholic League this winter.

Von Cameron Davis (6'4 WF / Walnut Ridge / 2020): Davis absolutely dominated Tuesday's contest, playing one of the most efficient games of his career. Going for 33 points and 10 rebounds, Davis bullied his way inside all night long, finishing off five three-point plays in the second half, prompting him to flex on the defense. Davis started off the night with back-to-back threes, a good sign of the progress he's made with his perimeter game. Davis has slimmed down and is in great shape, which has helped him become more explosive. With a terrific motor and confidence at his highest level, Davis has scored 79 points in the first two games of the season. With several mid-major offers already, Davis could attract some high-major attention with continued performances like Tuesday's.

Zach Sawyer (6'1 PG / Bishop Watterson / 2019): After a breakout junior season in which he was one of the best players in the Central Catholic League, Sawyer began his senior year on a high note. Going for 20 points, Sawyer was the toughest cover out on the perimeter, as he scored it on all three levels. Starting off the game by getting to the rim, Sawyer expanded his game, knocking down several pull-up jumper from the mid-range area in addition to a three. Sawyer has a very refined offensive game, as he can handle the ball against tight pressure, while showing an ability to get by people to the rim. Adding five rebounds and four assists to his stat line, Sawyer put together a great all-around performance against a tough Walnut Ridge backcourt.

Meech Coble (6'1 WG / Walnut Ridge / 2019): On a team that will need consistent outside shooting, Coble figures to be the guy for Walnut Ridge to provide just that. On Tuesday, Coble did what was asked of him, knocking down four corner threes to finish with 14 points. We were impressed with Coble's quick trigger release as well as his perimeter defense, as he played a solid two-way game on Tuesday. With Davis attracting so much attention in the middle, Coble is going to be a key piece for this team, as most defenses will zone Walnut Ridge and hope the Scots have an off night from the perimeter. As long as Coble is knocking down shots, Walnut Ridge will be able to play with anyone in the area.

Davis Boone (6'3 WF / Bishop Watterson / 2021): In our first viewing of Boone, we were really impressed with the sophomore forward. A physical force with a thick frame, Boone made an instant impact in the game, knocking down two threes in the first half. Showing off a very crisp shooting form, Boone looked like a natural out on the wing and was also able to handle the ball and create for others off the bounce. Finishing through contact and converting at the line, Boone put together a very confident performance against one of the more athletic teams that Watterson will face all winter long. Boone was active and engaged on both ends, adding four steals on the night. Look for Boone to be someone to break out in the CCL this season, as he was Watterson's most consistent scorer outside of Sawyer on Tuesday.

Qian Magwood (6'0 PG / Walnut Ridge / 2020): While foul trouble may have kept Magwood out for stretches on Tuesday, the junior guard played very efficient ball when he was on the floor. Finishing with five points, four rebounds, 10 assists and two steals, Magwood did exactly what was needed of him by setting up the Walnut Ridge offense and helping the Scots find easy looks. Magwood penetrated the Watterson zone from the top of the key, zipping passes to cutting teammates for scores. In a game where Walnut Ridge would need crisp passing and no wasted possessions, Magwood delivered exactly what the Scots needed at the point guard position. A high energy guard who defends with a lot of passion, Magwood is the heart and soul of this team and will need to continue to play at the level he did on Tuesday as a facilitator in order for this team to reach their peak.
