Senior guard Elijah Thomas stepped up in a big way in the Lions opening-night win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After a slow start that saw both teams go without a point in the opening three minutes, Gahanna guard Elijah Thomas started to take over for the Lions. The senior went on a 8-0 run by himself to give Gahanna an early lead, and Watkins Memorial would never be able to get the any closer as Gahanna’s full court man-to-man pressure, headed by freshman sensation Sean Jones was just too much to handle. Gahanna was able to open the season by rolling over the Warriors 60-39.

Elijah Thomas (6'1 PG / Gahanna / 2019):

With fellow senior Josh Corbin out for an extended period of time with an elbow injury, Thomas is expected to shoulder a lot of the offensive load throughout the season. He did not disappoint tonight, as he showed an ability to consistently hit catch-and-shoot threes. The senior finished the night with 16 points, showing the ability to create his own shot as well. Thomas is an under-the-radar guy that should have a breakout year and attract some college attention.

Phillip Pontious (6’0 G / Gahanna / 2020)

Pontious was certainly impressive in our first viewing of him. The junior plays a smart game and doesn’t force anything and was able to lead the Lions in scoring with 17 points. He was at the right place all the time for 50-50 balls and made the most out of catch and shoot opportunities. Philip could be a needed spark off the bench for the Lions this season.

Sean Jones (5’10 G / Gahanna / 2022)

The super sensational freshman’s debut was much anticipated, and he did not disappoint. Picking and choosing his spots on offensive the freshman guard finished the night with nine points and three assists. Most impressive was Sean’s efforts on defense. From the opening tip it was very clear that he was going to be a nuisance to the Watkins offense. He guarded the ball relentlessly no matter what kind of lead that Gahanna had. Sean is a special talent that we look forward to covering over his career.

Ethan Stearns (6’2 G / Watkins Memorial / 2019)

Stearns was one of the loan bright spots for Watkins. He led their team in scoring with 12 points, and he wasn’t afraid to take and make some tough shots. Coming off a good showing in the Fall League as well, Stearns might be a guy for Division III coaches to get familiar with.
