Gahanna alum Nick Ward scored a career-high 25 points on Sunday

We are officially one week into the college basketball season. Here is a look at how some of the former local stars did as their seasons began.

Alonzo Campbell (Gahanna/Alcorn State)- The 7-footer scored 6 points in a loss to Tulsa and scored 2 points in a win over Blue Mountain College. Campbell should start all season for the Braves.

Nick Muszynski (St. Charles/Belmont)- The 6’11” freshman had a fantastic game to start his career. He started for the Bruins and had 18 points on 8-11 shooting and racked up 7 rebounds and 5 blocks. Belmont figures to be the early favorite in the OVC this season.

Dibaji Walker (Independence/Cleveland State)- Walker scored 6 points in his opening game against Davidson, a game that they lost by 20. He only played 1 minute in their second game against Kent State.

Seth Fuller (Dublin Coffman/Elon)- Fuller has appeared in both games this season for Elon. In his second game against #8 North Carolina, he scored 5 points and pulled down a rebound in his 7 minutes of play.

Caden Sanchez (DeSales/High Point)- After not scoring in his first game, Sanchez scored 7 points and had 2 block on 3-5 shooting against a very good Wofford team. Sanchez should see minutes all year for the Panthers.

Antoine Smith (Westerville South/Incarnate Word)- Smith had a very strong first week for the Cardinals, who started this season 2-1. He scared 16 points (5-9, 4-4) against Texas Tech in his first game. He followed that up with 5 points and 7 rebounds against St. Francis and 6 points and 7 rebounds against Texas-Tyler. Smith should have a major role all season.

Kent State Golden Flashes - 2 Columbus-based athletes saw the floor in Kent State’s win over Cleveland State. BJ Duling (Newark) scored 2 points and had 3 rebounds while Akiean Frederick (Franklin Heights) had 2 points and 4 rebounds.

Taevion Kinsey (Eastmoor/Marshall)- Kinsey had a strong showing in his first game as a Thundering Herd. He scored 14 points and had 4 rebounds against Eastern Kentucky. He followed that up with 2 points in a big win over Hofstra. Kinsey should play an important role off the bench for Marshall this season as they try to return to the tournament once again.

Nick Ward (Gahanna/Michigan State)- After struggling against #1 Kansas (9 points and 5 rebounds), Ward responded with a massive game against Florida Gulf Coast. He scored 25 points, including an 11-17 showing from the FT line, and pulled down 10 rebounds. Michigan State figures to be a top-15 team all season, and Ward’s play is going to be one of their keys to success.

Sterling Manley (Pickerington Central/North Carolina)- After a rough first game against Wofford, Manley responded with a big game against Elon. He had 11 points and 8 rebounds. North Carolina looks like one of the early favorites to win the national championship this season, and Manley could have a big say in if they do or not.

Northern Kentucky Norse- 2 Norse players are from Pickerington Central, Jalen Tate and Adrian Nelson. Tate is averaging 12 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 3.7 APG after 3 games, including a 17-point 8-rebound performance against Wilmington. Nelson is averaging 5.3 PPG and 3 RPG, and turned in a 6-point 7-rebound performance his last game against Wabash. Northern Kentucky is one of the favorites in the Horizon League.

Dane Goodwin (Upper Arlington/Notre Dame)- Goodwin had a solid first 2 games for the Fighting Irish. He scored 10 points in his first game and 7 points in his second game while adding 4 rebounds in both appearances. Goodwin should be one the key bench pieces for an Irish team trying to return to the tournament after missing last season.

Braden Norris (Hilliard Bradley/Oakland)- Norris had two solid games to start his freshmen season at Oakland. He scored 9 points and added 5 rebounds and 4 assists in a win over Kalamazoo, and followed that up with 5 points in a tough loss against Toledo.

Ohio Bobcats- Ohio features 3 players from Columbus. In their opening win against Wilberforce, Jason Carter (Johnstown) had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Doug Taylor (Northland) had 6 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Dartis (Newark) should be the Bobcats top player this season when he returns.

Ohio State Buckeyes- The Wesson brothers (Westerville South) both had big games in 2 big wins for the Buckeyes this week. Andre, who figures to be the Buckeyes top defender this season, hit a couple of big 3s in their win over Cincinnati. Kaleb looked like the best player on the court, scoring 15 points and adding in 7 rebounds. Danny Hummer (Upper Arlington) even saw some minutes against Fort Wayne for a Buckeye team that looks like it could be the sleeper in the B10.

Javon Bess (Gahanna/Saint Louis)- Bess looks like he could be the best player on St. Louis, a team that looks like the early favorite in the A10. He’s averaging 14.5 PPG and 5 RPG, but the competition increases in the next few weeks with games against Seton Hall, Pittsburgh and Butler looming.

Connor Kern (Pickerington Central/The Citadel)- Kern scored 9 points in 28 minutes against #22 Clemson. He also added 4 rebounds to his cause. If you haven’t seen the Bulldogs play, tune in for a game because they play at an extremely fun pace and shoot a bunch of 3s.

Josh Gantz (Bishop Ready/UMass-Lowell)- Gantz got off to a great start in his senior season. He’s currently averaging 14.5 PPG and 5.5 RPG, and he helped lead the River Hawks to their first win of the season over Wagner.

Ross Ryan (Pickerington North/USC-Upstate)- Ryan had a solid opening week for USC-Upstate. He only scored 2 points in his game against South Carolina, but he had a solid second game scoring 4 points and adding 6 rebounds in a win over Brevard. Ryan should see solid minutes all season.

Onno Steger (Upper Arlington/Western Carolina)- Steger is coming off a big game in a tough loss to Charleston. He scored 10 points and added 2 rebounds and 3 assists.

Khalil Iverson (Delaware Hayes/Wisconsin)- Iverson is going to have a massive role for the Badgers this season. He only scored 7 points in a win against Coppin State, but he had 5 rebounds and should be one of the best defenders for a Wisconsin team that should hover around the top-25 all season.

James Manns (Walnut Ridge/Wright State)- Manns didn’t play much in his first two games, but he was able to score 4 points in a win against Western Carolina.

Jelani Simmons (Beechcroft/Youngstown State)- Simmons also didn’t play much in his first two games, but he did score 3 points in a loss against Akron. Simmons could see his minutes increase as the year progresses.
