The Gahanna sharp shooter will play college basketball for Ohio native Pat Kelsey

GAHANNA, Ohio -- "He's a Division I guard," Gahanna coach Tony Staib remarked so confidently in May 2016.

Josh Corbin was the player Staib was talking about, a rising sophomore with a distinct scoring ability to go along with an infectious confidence and swagger.

Up to that point, Corbin was really only known in circles around the Gahanna program after not logging a single minute on varsity as a freshman.

Staib, who has had his fair share of Division I talent over the years, knew exactly what he was looking at in the 6-foot-3 guard. Corbin, playing for Pro Bound Elite at the time, lit up the showcase that weekend, leading his team to a 16u tournament championship, despite his team playing in an older division.

It was that weekend that changed everything for Corbin, as he officially arrived on the radar in not only Central Ohio, but the rest of the state.

Instantly placing himself among the elite prospects in the 2019 class, Corbin, who is known to be a deadly shooter who can change a game with the flick of his wrist, is seeing his hard work over the last decade plus culminating right before his eyes.

Committing to Winthrop on Tuesday evening, Corbin looked back on that weekend when he informed 270 Hoops of his decision. Heading to a program led by Ohio native Pat Kelsey, Corbin will have a chance to make an early impact for a Winthrop team that will benefit from his red hot shooting.

Kelsey is one of the top mid-major coaches in the country, spending eight years as an assistant at Wake Forest and Xavier where he had a hand in developing several NBA guards, most notably Chris Paul of the Houston Rockets.

Kelsey is excited about the potential that Corbin possesses on the hardwood as both a scorer and facilitator.

Adding more to his skill set, Corbin enters his final season of high school basketball as more of an all-around player than he has ever been before. While everyone knows Corbin can flat out shoot it, he has put an emphasis on improving as a ball handler, facilitator and off the bounce scorer.

That hard work paid off in the summer, as Corbin was one of All Ohio Red's most productive players on the EYBL circuit, which led to a rapid increase in recruitment.

Winthrop took notice in July, offering Corbin and immediately turning up the heat on the Gahanna senior. The Eagles struck gold on Tuesday, as Corbin picked the perennial Big South power over 11 other programs, both in and out of state.

Corbin is the third commitment in Winthrop's 2019 class, joining point guard Russell Jones Jr. and forward Chase Claxton, both of South Carolina. With just two shooting guards on the roster, Corbin should figure to have every chance to earn early playing time for the Eagles.
