A big third quarter run propels Pickerington Central over Grove City

GROVE CITY, Ohio -- Coleton Landis scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds to propel Pickerington Central (6-3, 2-1) over Grove City (7-3, 2-2) in OCC-Ohio play.

Sophomore Josiah Fulcher scored nine points and Grove City’s Nick Erwin scored in 12 points in the first half, as the Tigers entered the locker room with a 29-25 lead.

The Greyhounds used steady guard play and good shot selection to offset the Tigers size advantage in the first half.

Pickerington Central used a pressing defense, and got big second halves out of Adrian Nelson and Landis to take control of game in third quarter. In the closing minutes of the third, the Tigers pressure resulted in a 18-2 run to jump to a 51-33 lead with a quarter remaining in the game.

In the final quarter, the Greyhounds were not able to cut deep into the deficit. Junior post player Landis caped off his night with a 12-point fourth quarter, displaying energy and good touch in the paint.

Landis came in averaging 9.4 points per game, and scored eight points higher than his previous season high of 18.

Nelson, the Detroit Mercy signee, played with more intensity to start third quarter, grabbing rebounds and leading the fast break. He finished with six points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Javohn Garcia added 15 points for the Tigers, who had a balanced offensive attack on Friday.

Erwin lead all scorers for Grove City with 22 points and P.J Jones, the Greyhounds leading scorer, added 15 points.

Fulcher, who started the game hot for the Tigers, finished the game with 11 points and five assists.

“We just tried to play fast and speed up the game, because we’re a fast playing team so we just tried to play how we usually play,” said Landis, the 6-foot-7 center. ”My teammates got me the ball and I was able to finish around the rim, it was just one of those nights I was getting to the basket and finishing,”

Both teams will return to action this coming Tuesday when the Tigers host Westerville South and Grove City travels to Newark.
