An updated look at each division in Central Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It's the last day of 2017 and with a night off from hoops, it's time to take a look at power rankings in Division I, II and III.

Division I

1. Pickerington North (1)

Record: 6-2

Strength of Record Points: 8

The Panthers had a rather light week, taking care of business on the road at Toledo Rogers. Pickerington North has two tough games in a span of 24 hours coming up, with a road matchup at No. 10 Reynoldsburg on Friday before hosting undefeated and No. 1 (D1) Beechcroft on Saturday.

2. Upper Arlington (3)

Record: 8-0

Strength of Record Points: 4

Upper Arlington made quick work of the state of Missouri, going 3-0 in Jefferson City and winning the Machens Great 8 Classic. One of two remaining undefeated teams in Division I, Upper Arlington hosts Marysville on Friday before taking on No. 4 (D3) Africentric on Saturday at Pickerington North.

3. Dublin Coffman (5)

Record: 9-0

Strength of Record Points: 4

With only archrival Upper Arlington as the lone other undefeated in the area, Dublin Coffman just continues to win. The Rocks went 2-0 in the Stephen Gussler Holiday Invitational, winning a close one over Dover on Thursday before rolling over Toledo Woodward on Friday. The Rocks head to Central Crossing on Friday before hosting Olentangy on Saturday. Dublin Coffman can't get caught looking ahead to the next week as the Rocks will host No. 1 Pickerington North on Jan. 9 and No. 2 Upper Arlington on Jan. 12 in a grueling stretch.

4. Pickerington Central (4)

Record: 5-3

Strength of Record Points: 8

Through eight games without its top player in Jeremiah Francis, Pickerington Central has still been competitive and among the elite in the area. Going 1-2 in the Battle of The Villages in Florida this past week, Pickerington Central took Covington Catholic, one of Kentucky's elite teams, to overtime before falling 75-68. The Tigers will look to keep rolling in OCC-Ohio play with a home matchup vs. Grove City on Friday.

5. Hilliard Bradley (2)

Record: 6-1

Strength of Record Points: 3

Hilliard Bradley suffered the biggest upset of the season thus far, losing on the road at previously 3-4 Hilliard Davidson, 37-35 on Friday. With its undefeated streak snapped, Hilliard Bradley looks to bounce back on the road at Delaware Hayes on Friday. The Jags will take on Northland on Saturday at Pickerington North in what should be Bradley's biggest challenge yet.

Stock Risers

Walnut Ridge

NR --> #11

Walnut Ridge appears in the power rankings for the first time all season after taking down previously No. 11 and 9-1 Olentangy Orange by 15 points at home. While the Scots stand at 4-4, Walnut Ridge has led at halftime of every game this season, including matchups vs. No. 3 Dublin Coffman, No. 10 Reynoldsburg and No. 3 (D2) South. Finally closing a tough game against a good opponent, Saturday's win over Olentangy Orange could be a sign of good things to come for the Scots.

Reynoldsburg

#14 --> #10

Reynoldsburg moves up four spots after taking care of business at the Stephen Gussler Holiday Invitational. With wins over tough Chillicothe and Cincinnati LaSalle teams, Reynoldsburg looks to ride that momentum into its toughest game of the season yet on Friday at home vs. No. 1 Pickerington North.

Hilliard Davidson

NR --> #15

The Wildcats enter the top 15 after delivering the biggest upset of the season at home vs. No. 2 Hilliard Bradley. Despite a 4-4 start, Hilliard Davidson is a tough defensive team that will give itself a chance to compete against anyone.

Top Matchups

No. 1 Pickerington North vs. No. 1 (D2) Beechcroft

We get our first No. 1 vs. No. 1 matchup since we began power rankings two seasons ago. In the night cap at The Challenge at Pickerington North, Beechcroft brings its 8-0 record to the Panthers' home floor. Pickerington North is the prohibitive favorite here, but don't sleep on a Beechcroft team that has dominated nearly everyone it has matched up against thus far.

No. 2 Upper Arlington vs. No. 4 (D3) Africentric

There is a repeating theme here. The Challenge at Pickerington North. In yet another big game on Saturday, No. 2 Upper Arlington takes on one of the top teams in the City League in No. 4 (D3) Africentric. Falling to Northland on a last second buzzer beater last season in the same event, Upper Arlington is looking to remain undefeated against a tough Nubian squad. If Africentric can deliver the upset, this should give the Nubians great momentum heading into City League play the following week.

No. 5 Hilliard Bradley vs. Northland

After suffering a major blow against Hilliard Davidson last week, Hilliard Bradley is looking to pick up a tough win against a Northland team that is reeling right now. Losing three of its last four games, Northland drops out of the top 15 for the first time since we started power rankings. The Vikings have struggled against top competition this season, but can get right back in the top 15 with a win over a Bradley team that is hurting without Braden Norris. This game will be a proving ground for both teams that are looking to get back to its winning ways.  This matchup will also take place in The Challenge at Pickerington North.

No. 6 Westerville Central vs. No. 14 Olentangy Liberty

The OCC-Buckeye has been arguably the most exciting league in the OCC so far, as each game has been competitive. With no real favorite establishing itself in the league, Westerville Central will look to take a step in that direction on Friday. Heading to Olentangy Liberty, Westerville Central can notch a tough road victory and establish itself among the elite in the league. Liberty is on the same page, as the Patriots have just one league loss after shaking things up in a convincing win over Westerville North last week.

No. 9 Westerville North vs. No. 13 Westerville South

The battle for Westerville resumes on Friday as Westerville North heads to rival Westerville South. North is struggling at the moment, as injuries have limited what the Warriors have been able to do in losses to Olentangy Liberty and Wellington. Looking to stay in a tie for first place in the division, North is looking to take down a scrappy South team that is maximizing its personnel thus far in the season.

Division II

1. Beechcroft (1)

Record: 8-0

Strength of Record Points: 19

Beechcroft heads into 2018 undefeated and rolling. The Cougars can make their biggest splash yet on the road at No. 1 (D1) Pickerington Central. If Beechcroft can win that game, there is no telling what they can accomplish this season in Division II.

2. Eastmoor (2)

Record: 7-2

Strength of Record Points: 14

Eastmoor went 1-1 in Detroit against quality competition this past week and will look to notch a win at home vs. a very tough Cincinnati Hughes team on Saturday. Second in the division in strength of record points behind only Beechcroft, Eastmoor has not been afraid of a challenge thus far in the season.

3. South (3)

Record: 7-2

Strength of Record Points: 6

South was only a few points away from going undefeated in Miami this past week, as the Bulldogs brought their south side grit to South Beach. The Bulldogs are only a few possessions away from being undefeated, as South has taken no steps back from last year's City League championship team. The Bulldogs host Jonathan Alder this week before City League play resumes back up.

4. Bishop Hartley (5)

Record: 6-2

Strength of Record Points: 9

Bishop Hartley went 1-1 away from home this weekend in the Tuscarawas Holiday Shootout. The Hawks have been up and down this season as this week will be a big test for them with road matchups against Division I opponents St. Charles and Groveport.

5. Fairfield Union (4)

Record: 6-2

Strength of Record Points: 4

Fairfield Union gave Beechcroft a tough game on Saturday, eventually falling to the Cougars 60-50. Senior guard Lucas Thompson was impressive in that game, going for 21 points and keeping the game close with his unlimited range. The bully in the Mid-State League, we see Fairfield Union continuing to roll through league play with matchups vs. Teays Valley and Amanda-Clearcreek this week.

# PRE Team Record SOR Points This Week

7 8 Granville 5-1 3 @ Licking Valley, vs. Licking Heights
8 NR Bexley 6-3 @ #7 (D3) Columbus Academy, @ London
9 10 DeSales 3-2 2 @ #2 (D3) Bishop Ready, @ #11 (D1) Walnut Ridge
10 NR Independence 5-4 5 No Games

Division III

1. Harvest Prep (1)

Record: 8-0

Strength of Record Points: 8

Harvest Prep has absolutely destroyed nearly every team that it has faced thus far in the season. Out to an 8-0 start, the Warriors have outscored opponents by 273 points. Electric scoring duo CJ Penha and CJ Anthony are both averaging 24.5 points per game for a team that should not be challenged until a Jan. 20 matchup at Wellington.

2. Bishop Ready (2)

Record: 8-0

Strength of Record Points: 6

Off to its best start in 20 years, Bishop Ready is playing excellent basketball at 8-0. The Silver Knights are looking to improve to 10-0 this week as matchups at home vs. Franklin Heights and No. 9 (D2) DeSales await. Already taking down Bishop Hartley this season, Ready can establish an early lead in the Central Catholic League if it is to take down the Stallions on Friday.

3. Wellington (4)

Record: 5-3

Strength of Record Points: 18

Wellington has not been afraid of a challenge in the non-conference slate, as the Jags have gone out and played on the road against tough teams like Westerville North, Bishop Hartley and Whitehall, as well as hosting Upper Arlington. The Jags notched its best win of the season on Saturday in a road win at Westerville North, becoming the first Division III team to take down a top 10 Division I program. Far and away the leader in Strength of Record Points, Wellington has plenty of upside on its schedule in that regard going forward as the Jags will take on Bishop Ready and No. 6 (D2) East later in the season.

4. Africentric (3)

Record: 6-2

Strength of Record Points: 3

Africentric suffered its second loss of the season in a tough road game against Toledo Saint Francis de Sales this past week. The Nubians will have no easy matchups this week as a Saturday contest vs. No. 2 (D1) Upper Arlington awaits. Africentric will then take on No. 11 (D1) Walnut Ridge and No. 3 (D2) South the following week in City League play.

5. Northmor (5)

Record: 9-0

Strength of Record Points: 0

Northmor is out to a hot start at 9-0 as the Golden Knights have been rolling as of late. However, with a schedule that is the weakest out of all top five teams, Northmor will have to continue to win in convincing fashion. A Jan. 10 matchup at home vs. Highland, who is tied atop the Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference with Northmor, will be the Golden Knights' toughest challenge to date. There is a chance that Northmor could be undefeated heading into a Feb. 13 matchup at Grandview.
