Beechcroft's Jelani Simmons is the Just Hoops Player of the Week!

In an unprecedented week of voting, Beechcroft's Jelani Simmons edged out Harvest Prep's CJ Penha in the final hour. Receiving a record 5,783 votes, Simmons overcame a 10 vote deficit in the last hour of voting on Friday.

Receiving 45 percent of a record 12,928 votes, Simmons becomes the first player from the City League to be named Just Hoops Player of the Week this season. Simmons also becomes the first player from Beechcroft to earn the honor of Player of the Week since 270 Hoops started the poll two seasons ago.

Simmons earns the honors after putting up a game-high 29 points in Beechcroft's all important win at Northland last Friday. Simmons led a Beechcroft team that became the first City League as well as Central Ohio school to win at Northland since January 2006.

Simmons, a Youngstown State signee, is the top scorer on an undefeated Beechcroft team that is No. 1 in Division II. Simmons and the Cougars hit the floor on Saturday in a road matchup at No. 4 (D2) Fairfield Union.

We also want to congratulate CJ Penha on a massive week and outpouring of votes. Penha's 5,327 votes rank second all-time behind Simmons' total. Penha put up 26.3 points per game last week in leading Harvest Prep to a tournament championship in Tennessee. Penha, a Taylor University signee, is the top scorer on a Harvest Prep team that is undefeated and No. 1 in Division III.
