A look at the top scorers in the 2018 class thus far in the season

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Scoring in basketball is an art in itself. Some make it look effortless, others make it look difficult. For the top players in Central Ohio's senior class, these guys have done it more than anyone else. Through the first three weeks of the season, let's take a look at the top 10 scoring seniors in the area.

1. JT Shumate (6'7 F, Newark) - 27.5 PPG

SIGNED: Walsh (D2)

After dominating the 270 Hoops Fall League for seven Sundays in September and October, we had a feeling Shumate was due for a dominant season. After all, the 6-foot-7 Walsh signee led the entire league, which was chock full of the top players in the area, in points and rebounds. Shumate has taken that production and gone a step further, dominating for Newark through four games. Averaging 27.5 points per game for the 2-2 Wildcats, Shumate began the season with a bang, going for a career-high 35 points against a lengthy and athletic Beechcroft team. Shumate has really developed as a three-level scorer, as he is one of the very best in the area at finishing around the basket with added strength, but can still kill a defense with his ability to shoot off the dribble.

2. Caleb Collins (6'0 PG, Fairfield Christian) - 27 PPG

Collins has been tearing it up for Fairfield Christian this season, averaging 27 points per game through five games. Collins has the second-highest single game scoring output of any player, as he went for 42 points in a win over Liberty Christian East on Monday. Collins followed that up with 23 points and a game-winning three over Grove City Christian on the road on Tuesday. Take a look at Collins' clutch shot below.

3. CJ Penha (6'6 F, Harvest Prep) - 23.7 PPG

SIGNED: Taylor (NAIA)

One of the biggest matchup nightmares in the Mid-State League, Penha is absolutely tearing it up for the No. 1 (D3) Harvest Prep Warriors. A multi-dimensional 6-foot-6 forward with length, Penha wrapped up his recruitment by signing with NAIA Taylor University out of Indiana on Tuesday. Penha followed up that major moment with 30 points in a win over Berne Union later in the evening. Penha will be heavily relied upon for the rest of the season as Harvest Prep is looking to stake its claim as the top team in Division III.

4. Jelani Simmons (6'6 G, Beechcroft) - 23.2 PPG

SIGNED: Youngstown State (D1)

Becoming the first Beechcroft player in more than 10 years to sign to a Division I program, Simmons came into his senior year with high expectations. Through six games, Simmons is exceeding those expectations and then some, as his high-level scoring has No. 1 (D2) Beechcroft out to a 6-0 start. A three-level scorer with near elite level athleticism, Simmons is one of the toughest covers in the City League, as he can make you pay from three, from mid-range and at the rim. Simmons is the top offensive weapon on a Beechcroft team that leads the area in total points thus far.

5. Reiko Bagley (6'5 G, Whitehall) - 23 PPG

Bagley has wasted zero time in establishing himself as one of the very best unsigned seniors in not only Central Ohio, but the rest of the state. Moving to Columbus from Rock Island, Ill., in the spring, Bagley enjoyed a successful AAU season with Elite Basketball Club, as a deep group of rising seniors, including a few on this list, helped EBC win a few tournaments in the summer. Bagley rode that momentum into the 270 Hoops Fall League, where he played well for the majority of the seven sessions against the elite in the area. Now as the top player at No. 15 Whitehall, Bagley is putting up big-time numbers for the Rams. Averaging 23 points per game, Bagley scored 29 points against Walnut Ridge to open the season in a big win for Whitehall. Look for Bagley's recruitment to really heat up as regional coaches begin to familiarize themselves with the 6-foot-5 wing guard.

6. Dane Goodwin (6'5 G, Upper Arlington) 21.5 PPG

SIGNED: Notre Dame (D1)

The most prolific scorer in the 2018 class statewide, Goodwin isn't new to this, but he is certainly true to this. While he hasn't put up the type of numbers he did last season when he averaged just under 26 points per game, Goodwin is still elite in this class. While a ton has changed for Goodwin since last season, including his recruitment, the Notre Dame signee has remained a dominant three-level scoring threat that is as dangerous a shooter as any we've ever seen. Goodwin leads a No. 3 Upper Arlington team that plays a physical brand of ball on both ends of the floor. We wouldn't be surprised to see Goodwin explode for a 40+ point game soon.

7. Jerome Hunter (6'7 F, Pickerington North) - 20.3 PPG

SIGNED: Indiana (D1)

The top ranked player in the class, Hunter has continued to evolve his game and become more dominant. The key piece on a No. 1 Pickerington North team that is as deep and talented as it has ever been, Hunter is still putting up near elite numbers. A natural born scorer who can really dominate when he gets to his hot zones on the floor, Hunter has been able to expand his game without losing his all-around effectiveness. Hunter has as good of a turnaround game as we have seen in the last few years, as there is not much a defense can do with him when he's locked in.

8. Tre Baumgardner (6'1 G, Africentric) - 19.8 PPG

SIGNED: Minnesota State (D2)

While Baumgardner is what basketball purists would call a pure point guard, as he can set the table for the offense, control tempo on both ends and lock down opposing point guards, he is also a talented scorer. When Baumgardner came into high school as a freshman at City Prep, his bread and butter was his outside shot. While he can still knock down threes, Baumgardner has evolved his entire offensive game and is a threat to score on the bounce. Baumgardner leads an undefeated No. 2 (D3) Africentric team that is looking to make a statement at home vs. No. 2 (D2) Eastmoor on Friday.

9. Therron Jennings (6'4 G/F, Beechcroft) - 19.7 PPG

While Jennings has been all-around productive since he first stepped on the court as a varsity player at Beechcroft, the 6-foot-4 guard/wing has worked hard to refine his entire offensive skill set. All that hard work in the gym is paying off, as Jennings has been one of the most efficient players in the entire senior class for the 6-0 Cougars. With a lengthy wingspan and thick build, Jennings can play and defend multiple positions, while having an ability to knock down threes, block shots at the rim and create turnovers with his length in the passing lanes.

10. Jejuan Weatherspoon (6'3 G, Northland) - 19.5 PPG

While his older brother JD Weatherspoon is remembered as arguably the best (and most powerful) dunker in City League history, Jejuan Weatherspoon is a much different player. More of an all-around scorer than JD was, Jejuan is a downhill scorer who can punish defenses in transition. Scoring 19.5 points per game thus far, Weatherspoon has been the alpha male for an undefeated and No. 7 Northland team that is looking to restore order in the City League North. With offers from a few of the top Division II programs in the region, Weatherspoon is one of the elite unsigned seniors in Central Ohio.
