Dane Goodwin scored 39 points to lead Upper Arlington to an outright OCC title

DUBLIN, Ohio -- One thing Dane Goodwin does not like to do is lose. In Upper Arlington's first matchup vs. rival Dublin Coffman at home earlier in the year, Goodwin and the Golden Bears did just that, giving up sole possession first place of the OCC-Central for the time being to the Rocks.

On Friday, Goodwin would not let history repeat itself, as the Ohio State commit dropped a career-high 39 points to lead Upper Arlington an outright OCC-Central title in a 75-57 win over Dublin Coffman.

Starting off fast on Friday, Goodwin scored Upper Arlington's first six points in the game's opening two minutes. Finishing with 15 points in the first quarter, Goodwin knocked down five of his first six shots, as he helped Upper Arlington establish a 20-11 lead.

Staying hot in the second quarter, Goodwin buried a three to open the frame, as he would knock down threes to start the second, third and fourth quaters on Friday. Heading into halftime with 27 points, Goodwin's scoring outburst helped Upper Arlington establish a 39-25 halftime advantage.

While he would be held to five points in the third quarter, Goodwin's presence allowed Upper Arlington's shooters to get open, as the Golden Bears continued to press the gas on the road, leading 55-42 heading into the fourth.

With 32 points through three quarters, Goodwin would be looking to eclipse his career high of 35 points, which he has scored on three separate occasions this season. Knocking down a three to open the frame, Goodwin appeared to be on a mission in the final eight minutes.

Catching a pass on the left wing with just over three minutes to go, Goodwin would drive baseline for a huge slam over a Coffman defender, notching his career high 37 points. Putting UA ahead 71-53 with 3:09 to go, Goodwin put the final nail in the coffin for Dublin Coffman.

Checking out with 39 points in the final minute, Goodwin's scoring outburst was more than enough to lead Upper Arlington to an outright OCC-Central title. Knocking down 14-of-17 shots from the floor, Goodwin oozed with efficiency on Friday, knocking down five threes and hitting six of eight shots at the free-throw line.

Outside of Goodwin, sophomore forward Max Martz added 15 points and five rebounds, while senior point guard Jordan Bailey added 13 points, all of which in the second half.

For Dublin Coffman, freshman point guard Dominiq Penn played a strong game, finishing with 16 points. Sophomore wing Will Hunter added 13 points, while junior forward Nick Carlson finished with 11 points. Breakout sophomore Derek Van Vlerah had a solid all-around night, finishing with nine points, four rebounds and four assists.

With the win, Upper Arlington finishes the regular season at 20-2. The fifth seeded Golden Bears won't play again until Feb. 23, opening the Central District tournament against No. 39 Watkins Memorial at 7 p.m.

For Dublin Coffman, the Rocks fall to 10-10 on the season, but will get to make up Friday's loss quickly on Saturday with a matchup against Linden-McKinley at home at 7:30 p.m.
