270 Hoops has refreshed its 2020 player rankings

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It's rankings week at 270 Hoops. With that comes a new format for how we evaluate players. While the previous model was an overall ranking system, we have moved to ranking by position.

Grouping players into point guards, wing guards, wing forwards and centers, 270 Hoops has critically evaluated each player in the area, combining an analysis of production, play style, height and college projection to formulate the rankings.

We kick off rankings week with a look at a very talented 2020 class. You can see the full rankings here.

Point Guards

This class is very, very good. With four starting varsity guards leading the pack, 2020 is ripe in lead guard talent. The former No. 1 overall player in the previous update, Dominiq Penn still leads the point guard group. Penn has been stellar this season, scoring, assisting, handling and defending at a high level.

Coming right behind Penn is another uber-talented lead guard in Hilliard Bradley's Matt Allocco. An absolutely deadly shooter, Allocco could end up being the top player in the class, regardless of position, when it's all said and done. The 6-foot-1 guard has excelled shooting the ball for a Bradley team that is undefeated in league play.

Rounding out the top three is Harvest Prep's prized freshman prospect, CJ Anthony. A more physical guard than the two ahead of him, Anthony is a downhill ball-handler that can get to the rim and finish. An aggressive defender that has given opposing guards fits, Anthony is an all-around player that is a big reason why Harvest Prep received the No. 1 seed in Division IV.

Rank Name Height School
1 Dominiq Penn 6'0 Dublin Coffman
2 Matt Allocco 6'1 Hilliard Bradley
3 CJ Anthony 6'0 Harvest Prep
4 Qian Magwood 5'9 Walnut Ridge
5 Kobe Righter 5'10 DeSales

Wing Guards

From what we have evaluated, 2020 is still relatively thin at the wing guard position. Filled with talented point guards, the guards on the wing are still yet to emerge in this very young class.

Nonetheless, at the top is none other than Pickerington Central's Josiah Fulcher. A big-time shooter, Fulcher is still very young for his class, but that is not reflected on the hardwood. Hitting some big shots in important games earlier in the season, Fulcher showed the type of high upside that he has on the wing early in the year.

Rank Name Height School
1 Josiah Fulcher 6'1 Pickerington Central
2 Jamir Simpson 6'2 Pickerington Central
3 Ethan Kuhns 6'2 Bloom-Carroll
4 Addison Harvey 5'10 Delaware Hayes
5 Hunter Shedenhelm 6'1 Pickerington North

Wing Forwards

For as good as the point guard group is, the wing forwards may be even better. With a few elite level athletes that are making big-time plays at the varsity level, the 2020 class is looking promising on the wing.

Leading the class is the top freshman scorer on the year, Walnut Ridge's Von Cameron Davis. Having the most productive freshman season of any player in the City League since Jared Sullinger, Davis has been outstanding this season, averaging more than 16 points per game and taking control of the Walnut Ridge program. Davis has great feet inside, scoring at a high level from the block and rebounding like a grown man. Davis could be the best player in the class over the next few seasons if he adds more to his skill set on the perimeter, which would make him into a near impossible matchup at the high school level.

Right behind Davis is Hilliard Bradley super athlete Chris Mayfield. One of the most athletic players around, Mayfield reminds us a lot of former Delaware standout Khalil Iverson. Starting for a 20-1 Hilliard Bradley team, Mayfield has been productive all season long, rebounding and defending at a high level, in addition to scoring when those opportunities arise. If Mayfield can continue to grow and add length to his already athletic frame, he could turn into a really high level prospect.

Rounding out the top three is South wing Marcus Johnson. The first player in the class to receive a Division I offer (Maryland-Eastern Shores), Johnson has resumed a role off the bench for the top seed in Division II South. An elite athlete with some raw skills, Johnson has a chance to become a legitimate Division I wing player if he continues to develop his game.

Rank Name Height School
1 Von Cameron Davis 6'4 Walnut Ridge
2 Chris Mayfield 6'2 Hilliard Bradley
3 Marcus Johnson 6'3 South
4 Marcus Peaks 6'4 Watkins Memorial
5 Gage Keyes 6'4 Hilliard Davidson

Centers

A class dominated by guards and wings, 2020 is very thin at the center position. The only two players that we have seen in the freshman class, Upper Arlington's Max Mollman and Whetstone's Jaden Arledge lead the area in the post.

Mollman is an intriguing post presence at 6-foot-7 that has solid hands, feet and has enough touch to hit from the outside. Playing primarily junior varsity at Upper Arlington, look for Mollman to emerge as a sophomore next season.

For Arledge, the Whetstone big has been a pleasant surprise on varsity for the Braves. At 6-foot-6, Arledge has good size, strength and scoring ability inside. Look for Arledge to really emerge as a sophomore next year.

Rank Name Height School
1 Max Mollman 6'7 Upper Arlington
2 Jaden Arledge 6'6 Whetstone
