South came back from down 16 to remain undefeated at Africentric

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus City League is witnessing history. Never in South's 117-year history have the Bulldogs won as many games to start a season without a loss as this year's group has. Taking its 14-0 record on the road to Africentric, South erased a 16-point halftime deficit to remain unbeaten in a 67-63 victory.

In a first half where South battled foul trouble, lack of offensive flow and turnovers, the Bulldogs looked out of sync for the entire first 16 minutes. As Africentric was able to stretch its lead to as much as 19 points in the second quarter, the Nubians relied on junior guard Tre Baumgardner, whose 16 first half points helped them establish a 39-23 lead at halftime.

In the second half, it was all Bulldogs. Opening up the third quarter on a 12-0 run in the first four minutes, South was led by senior wing Dez Robinson, who scored 10 points in the run. Causing havoc on the defensive end and creating points in transition, the Bulldogs were able to inch within four points at 39-35 with four minutes to go in the third.

While Africentric would strike back, the Nubians looked to have lost a great deal of momentum that it worked hard to establish in the first half. Heading into the fourth quarter with a 51-45 lead, Africentric would need to fend off a charging South team in the final eight minutes.

Much like the third quarter, South came out swinging to open up the fourth. Going on a 7-0 run to begin the period, the Bulldogs took a momentary 52-51 lead with 6:56 to go. Africentric would respond, putting together a 7-2 run in the next two minutes, leading 58-54 with less than five minutes to go.

Forcing a big stop on Africentric's next possession, South put together a stellar possession, moving the ball around to find senior wing Bruelle Thompson open for three. Thompson's attempt rolled around the basket several times, nearly coming out twice, but falling through the net to bring the Bulldogs to within one at 58-57 with 4:33 to go.

After each team turned it over, South would score in transition, as Robinson hit a streaking Thompson with a long outlet pass to take a 59-58 lead with 3:22 remaining. On South's next possession after forcing another Africentric stop, Thompson would hit junior forward Jeremiah Green with a beautiful wrap around pass, extending the Bulldogs' lead to 61-58 with just under three minutes to play.

On Africentric's next trip, sophomore wing Dorrian Holloway converted a three-point play, tying Wednesday's game at 61 with 2:24 to play.

Forcing another South turnover, Africentric would convert at the line after sophomore wing Anthony Bowman was fouled. As Bowman knocked down two free throws, the Nubians took a 63-61 lead with 2:04 remaining.

Unfortunately for the Nubians, it would not score again. Even after forcing a South stop, Africentric would falter at the charity stripe as junior forward Jah Bennett missed two attempts at the line with just over 1:50 remaining. Bennett would redeem himself on the next trip, blocking a lay up attempt from South, helping Africentric regain possession.

However, Africentric's turnover woes would come back to bite them again, as the Nubians turned it over on its next trip, giving South possession, trailing 63-61 with 1:24 to go.

On South's next trip, sophomore guard Treohn Watkins found a wide open Max Jackson underneath, tying Wednesday's game at 63 with 1:04 to go. South would take advantage after another Africentric stop, as senior forward Lamont Broomfield scored inside on a controversial continuation And-1 play, giving South a 66-63 lead with just over 45 seconds to play.

Africentric would fail to score on its next trip, as Watkins converted one of two attempts at the line on South's ensuing possession, giving the Bulldogs a 67-63 lead with just under 20 seconds to go.

Holding the Nubians scoreless on the final possession, South completed its 6-0 run in the final 2:04 of Wednesday's game, shutting Africentric out late to remain undefeated. Ranked at No. 2 in the state in Division II, South is on a historic run at the moment that cannot be understated.

With the win, South improves to 15-0 on the season and retains its one-game lead over Eastmoor in the City League South. For Africentric, the Nubians fall to 9-7 on the season. Wednesday's loss is Africentric's fourth in the last five league games.

Robinson led South with 18 points and 12 rebounds, coming alive in the second half. Watkins added 15 points, Thompson added 12 points and Broomfield finished with 10 points.

For Africentric, Baumgardner led all scorers with 23 points. Junior guard James Hodge added 11 points, while Bowman finished with 10 points.
