A look at some of the top freshmen in Central Ohio this season

Josiah Fulcher

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- More than a month into the high school basketball season, Central Ohio's talented group of freshmen are beginning to emerge. A class that came in with high expectations, this group has been terrific so far this season, with several guys playing important roles on top teams.

Let's take a look at the top impact freshmen in Central Ohio.

Von Cameron Davis

Height Position School
6'4 SF/PF Walnut Ridge
Evaluation Top Performance
Talented wing forward with great footwork and post skills. Rebounds like a grown man. High motor. Gym rat who is dedicated to his craft. Could develop into a lethal wing. 17 points, 12 rebounds vs. Pickerington Central

Davis has been Walnut Ridge's top player this season, transitioning beautifully to the varsity level. Davis has solid length and athleticism for 6-foot-4, as he can play on the post and perimeter, but is best served on the block right now. Davis has good footwork, can really score in the post, while being a committed rebounder who is effective inside and outside his area. Davis is capable of knocking down the mid-range jumper, while showing some promise as a scorer off the bounce. Davis' stock and upside will depend on how much he grows and the advancements he makes to his perimeter skills. A few inches and added ball-handling and shooting ability could turn Davis into a devastating matchup on the wing in a few years. Davis holds an offer from Stony Brook, which he earned after turning in a 17-point, 12-rebound performance against Walnut Ridge last Friday.

Dominiq Penn

Height Position School
6'0 PG Dublin Coffman
Evaluation Top Performance
High-IQ lead guard who can really shoot the ball. Excels in pick and roll, has very good quickness and is effective in tight spaces. Handles the ball at a high level. Elite crossover 28 points vs. Toledo Start

Penn came into this season as the No. 1 player in his class and has played like it so far. Penn is Dublin Coffman's top player and top scorer, as he can score the ball on nearly every level. Penn excels shooting the ball and playing in the pick and roll, as he can score and assist in nearly every way. Penn is also an elite passer, as he can drive and dish as well as anyone. Penn will become a really elite scorer once he adds strength and becomes a better finisher inside.

CJ Anthony

Height Position School
6'0 PG Harvest Prep
Evaluation Top Performance
Two-way guard who is coming into his own. Talented ball handler who can get to the rim and finish. Reliable shooter. Gets out and defends on the perimeter. Thrives on applying pressure on opposing ball handlers 21 points vs. Neshaminy (PA)

While guards like Penn, Matt Allocco and Josiah Fulcher receive most of the publicity in the 2020 class, Anthony is not far behind, if at all. The 6-foot guard is getting into a groove at the moment, scoring in double-figures in the last six games, including four performances of at least 17 points. Anthony can really defend and plays with a high motor. Don't sleep on Anthony, especially since he is at a school that produces quality guards.

Matt Allocco

Height Position School
6'2 PG Hilliard Bradley
Evaluation Top Performance
A D2 coach once described Allocco as "the perfect prospect." Elite shooter with good length on the wing. High-IQ, son of a coach. Makes good decisions with the ball. Becoming a better scorer off the bounce. Has range out to 30 feet. If he gets to his brother's size (6'4), watch out. 33 points vs. Worthington Kilbourne

After scoring 28 points in his first four games, Allocco exploded in the next two, scoring 55 points including a breakout 33-point performance against Worthington Kilbourne. Allocco is a big-time shooter who has a chance to be very, very good. The son of a coach, Allocco brings IQ, toughness, scoring and length to the wing. If Allocco can get to his brother Chris' size (Chris grew to 6'4), he could be a devastating matchup for most guards.

Josiah Fulcher

Height Position School
6'1 SG Pickerington Central
Evaluation Top Performance
Elite shooter who plays with a lot of confidence. Has length and a lot of room to grow. While shooting is his strong suit, Fulcher can put the ball on the floor and score. Steps up in big games. Not afraid to pull the trigger. 14 points vs. Groveport (four threes)

When it's all said and done, Fulcher could end up being the top player in the 2020 class. A deadly shooter who plays with a lot of confidence and belief, Fulcher has stepped up in Pickerington Central's biggest games. The freshman wing has brought surge-like scoring ability, knocking down big threes for the Tigers, usually in a hurry. Fulcher looks to have a few more inches to go as he continues to grow into his frame, which will only help his stock going forward. He and Jeremiah Francis will be a deadly backcourt duo for years to come.
