GAHANNA, Ohio -- Replacing nearly all of its scoring from last season, Walnut Ridge is one of the youngest teams in all of Central Ohio. For what the Scots lack in experience, the 4841 boys make up for it with heart, toughness and length.

Holding off a late Cincinnati Hughes rally in the second half, Walnut Ridge rode its senior class to a 65-55 opening win on Saturday. Leading the way for the Scots was senior wing guard Delvon Stanford, who finished with a team-high 17 points.

Opening up a 40-24 lead at halftime, Walnut Ridge would slip up a bit in the third quarter, allowing Hughes to get within eight points at the end of the frame. The Scots locked up in the final frame, holding on to a 10-point win.

The senior guard Stanford provided for the majority of the Scots' scoring in the second half, adding seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal to his stat line. Waiting his turn the last few years behind older players, Stanford looked very good in the opener.

Outside of Stanford, senior center Kaleyl Edwards provided the beef in the front court, finishing with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Edwards finished strong underneath for most of the game, while cleaning up the glass underneath.

Outside of the senior duo, junior guard Roshawn Reaves added 12 points as well, all of which in the first half.

Walnut Ridge's freshman duo of point guard Qian Magwood and forward Von Cameron Davis were very impressive, providing for all of the Scots' bench points. Magwood, who is as dynamic with the ball as any young guard in the area, played most of the game, finishing with eight points, five rebounds and four assists. Davis, who brings solid length and skill at 6-foot-4, finished with seven points and five rebounds.

For Hughes, the Big Red were without stud senior wing Corry Long for most of the game, who went out with an injury after falling hard on his back in the first quarter. Senior guard Jordan Robinson finished with 20 points, while senior wing AJ Smith added 14.

With the win, Walnut Ridge moves on to a Monday matchup on the road at Reynoldsburg (1-0).
