Dublin Coffman freshman point guard Dominiq Penn scored 20 points on Friday

DUBLIN, Ohio -- Dublin Coffman and Grove City battled for five 10-minute periods in a scrimmage on Friday that had the feel of a March tournament game. Two teams that have a lot of history over the years, Coffman and Grove City battled back and forth, ending in an 85-85 tie in all after five periods. Let's take a look at the top performers.

Dominiq Penn (5'11 PG / 2020): Ranked No. 1 in 2020, we do not regret putting Penn at the top of his class, as he played about as well as a freshman could play against a scrappy and physical Grove City backcourt. Penn impressed with his outside shooting as usual, but it was his ball-handling and the way he kept the rock on a strong that stood out the most. Penn has incredible poise, vision and passing ability, as he is as good at driving and kicking to the wing as any guard we have seen this fall. Penn understands the game, does not play timid, and has the type of upside at the point guard position that will land him at a very high level. In all, Penn finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists, knocking down five three-point field goals. With an offer from Stony Brook, Penn is being recruited by Ohio State and Michigan, as he is expected to visit the UM campus sometime this winter.

Nick Carlson (6'6 PF / 2018): Carlson has a chance to be one of the better scorers to come through the Coffman program and he showed it on Friday. Finishing with 22 points and six rebounds, Carlson was effective scoring the ball on all levels, impressing with his mid-range and outside touch, while showing improved low post ability. Carlson has a big body and knows how to use it, despite not being the greatest of leapers. What really stands out for Carlson is his defensive footwork, as he can defend without fouling on all levels, which allows him to shut down opposing forwards and really give this Coffman team a boost.

Trevor Grady (6'5 SF / 2018): Getting our first look at Grady since the summer, the 6-foot-5 wing impressed as a shooter, knocking down four threes and showing increased range. A long and rangy wing with solid athleticism, Grady has been a player we've had our eyes on for awhile now, as he possesses some decent upside on the perimeter. Grady is the younger brother of freshman Wisconsin linebacker Griffin Grady.

Bryce Woodford (6'7 C / 2017): A surprise player for not only us but for the Coffman program, the wide bodied and rangy Woodford was really impressive on the interior for the Rocks on Friday. Woodford, who is known to be an exceptional student, has broad shoulders and a thick frame, which allowed him to dominate the glass while he was in off the bench, finishing with six points, eight rebounds and two blocks in total. Woodford provides a level of toughness for Coffman in the paint that the Rocks will need this season, as he could possibly be a late rising Division III prospect, which would be a good fit given his strong academic portfolio.

Anthony Tyree

Anthony Tyree (6'5 SF/PF / 2017): Grove City's top performer on Friday, Tyree was very impressive in all facets of the game, as he finished with a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds. Tyree, who is a long 6-foot-5 wing forward with some athleticism, impressed on both ends of the floor, defending nearly every position, highlighted by two midcourt steals and fastbreak dunks. Tyree was equally impressive scoring in the half court, as his length, athleticism and footwork inside were intriguing. A breakout player for Grove City as a junior, Tyree is primed for a big senior season, which should definitely ramp up his recruitment, as he brings athleticism and versatility to the floor. Tyree was very effective from 14 feet and in on Friday, as he gave Grove City the toughness and swagger it needed inside to compete with Coffman.

Zach Sammeth (6'2 SG / 2017): Arguably the best spot-up shooter in the gym on Friday, Sammeth was in a rhythm from deep, knocking down five threes to finish with 22 points. Giving Grove City a threat on the perimeter, Sammeth converted time after time, making Dublin Coffman pay for most of the night. A bigger wing guard with some size and skill, Sammeth would be a quality look for Division III programs looking for a gritty senior who can flat out shoot.

PJ Jones (6'2 PG / 2018): A three-year starter in the backcourt, Jones is really coming into his own as a seasoned point guard that is the leader of this Grove City team. Jones was very solid on Friday, commanding the floor and making plays all night for Grove City. The 6-foot-2 guard, who has been a major target for hometown Division II program Ohio Dominican, finished with 14 points, four rebounds and eight assists. Jones is a strong ball-handler who understands pace, as he made several impressive passes leading to Greyhound buckets. A strong season from Jones could garner increased attention from some of the region's top Division II programs.

Matt Burgess (5'10 PG / 2017): Burgess was the scrappiest player on the floor on Friday, as he was very impressive on the defensive perimeter for most of the night. A quick guard that can stick with just about anyone on the perimeter, Burgess provided a defensive spark for the Greyhounds, finishing with seven points, 10 rebounds and six steals. Burgess and Jones provide for a tough Grove City backcourt that should help the Greyhounds improve from last season.
