COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After games were canceled on Friday night, the City League will have a slew of games on tap for the week ahead. The favorites in each division are beginning to spread themselves apart from the other teams, as they held steady over the last week. The City League championship game is approaching rapidly and the two leading contenders continued their roll during City League play.

City League North

This Past Week: The biggest game in the north division came on Tuesday as Northland traveled to Beechcroft and flexed their muscle in a blowout win for the Vikings. An 83-52 victory over the Cougars keeps Northland in the driver seat, steering towards East High School for the City League championship game. Northland also blew out ISA Prep on Saturday 76-41 and completed the season sweep over International on Monday night in the make-up game. 

Linden also kept pace with the Vikings on Tuesday as they held Whetstone under 30 points and took the game going away. The Panthers also escaped with a 62-53 home win over Beechcroft on Thursday and a road win over Mifflin on Monday. Linden is still in striking distance with Northland, if Northland slips up and Linden can beat Northland at Linden, they can still represent the north division. 

Centennial got back to their winning ways, defeating East on Tuesday and snapping a seven game losing streak. The Stars also beat Independence on Wednesday in an interconference battle before losing their rematch to Beechcroft in the make-up game on Monday. Mifflin also beat International on Tuesday.

The Week Ahead: The two top teams in the north have a combined three home games this week, with Linden hosting International on Tuesday and East on Friday. Northland will welcome Mifflin into their home on Tuesday then visit Centennial on Friday. 

On Saturday, four of the teams will be in action and three will welcome teams into their buildings. Beechcroft welcomes Cleveland Heights, Western Hills is visiting Linden-McKinley and Northland has Spire Academy coming off Tamarack Rd. to Northcliff Dr. for what could be the toughest test for the Vikings. Mifflin is the only team to leave their school on Saturday as they take to the road to visit Central Crossing.  

City League South 

This Past Week: Africentric kept up their winning ways most of last week, beating Eastmoor Academy on Tuesday and Pickerington Central at the Jared Sullinger Classic on Saturday before falling to Walnut Ridge on Monday. The loss to the Scots snapped a four-game winning streak for the suddenly hot Nubians who showed why they were in the last two state final fours, playing with heart and toughness. Walnut Ridge beat Independence on Tuesday before running into a buzzsaw of an Olentangy Orange team on Saturday afternoon. The Scots are firmly in second place in the City League south with another game to go against South for who will represent the south division. 

City League south leader South Bulldogs continued their winning ways this past week with wins over Independence last Tuesday and West on Monday. They are still unbeaten in the south division and if Walnut Ridge is upset before their rematch, it will send South back to the City League championship game. 

Marion Franklin is the surprise of the entire City League, sitting in third place in the south, with a 4-3 record in the division. The Red Devils have won three straight after a crushing loss to Eastmoor last week. They squeaked out road wins over Briggs, International and Independence from last Tuesday to Monday night. After a loss to South last Tuesday, West High School honored head coach and City League legend Ike Jefferson on Monday and got their fourth straight rivalry win over Briggs, 71-67. Briggs has dropped back-to-back games and three out of four in the City League. 

Independence is still winless in the division, struggling to find success in this season behind a brand new coaching staff. 

The Week Ahead: The Bulldogs from South high school have three tough games this week, they visit Africentric on Tuesday, Eastmoor on Thursday and will welcome in the highly athletic Marion Franklin team on Friday. Their confidence can skyrocket even more if they can handle the schedule this week. 

Marion Franklin and West play on Tuesday in what could be a sneaky fun game between two teams that compete hard no matter who is on the court. The Red Devils also have games against Columbus Academy, South and will cap off a 5-game week hosting Granville. Eastmoor has three more games left in their week of four games, they lost to Bishop Ready on Monday, the Warriors now travel to Walnut Ridge, before hosting South on Thursday and West on Friday. 

Three south division teams are in action on Saturday, the Red Devils take the floor at home, Briggs travels to Bishop Ready and Walnut Ridge hosts Gahanna Lincoln Saturday night.
