Halfway through the season, conference play has heated up

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It's hard to believe, but the season has flown by and we're right around the halfway mark. Tournament season will be here before we know it.

That said, let's not rush things and enjoy all the great action that has taken place recently. January is a great month of hoops, between league matches and weekend showcases.

Below, we take a look at all you need to know to stay up to date with teams in the Ohio Capital Conference.

OCC-Buckeye

The Week That Was: For the second straight week, there was no movement in the division standings, as the top tier teams all had comfortable wins over the bottom tier teams on Tuesday. Reynoldsburg handled Central Crossing, Newark did the same to Groveport Madison and Pickerington Central defeated Lancaster. It was the start of an odd week for the Tigers, who after their win over the Gales, were upset by New Albany, but bounced back with an impressive win against Lima Senior over the weekend. Reynoldsburg had a solid win over Gahanna and Newark finished the week undefeated with close victories against Pickerington North and Austintown Fitch. At the time this post was being written, both the Raiders and Tigers have games to be determined at Flyin To The Hoop against Oak Ridge (FL) and Parkersburg South (WV).

The Week Ahead: Newark currently leads the division at 4-0 and should stay on top for at least another week, as they play Lancaster on Friday. On the same day, all eyes in the division will be on the showdown between Reynoldsburg and Pickerington Central, who are tied for second at 3-1 in the league. Both squads will have a notable follow up game on Saturday at the Jared Sullinger Classic as the Raiders take on Garfield Heights and the Tigers square up against Africentric. Central Crossing will look to get their first division win against Groveport on Friday.

The Week That Was: Each team had two division games this past week which brought some clarity towards the standings and now becomes a four-team race to win the league. Going two-for-two, we saw Big Walnut beat Dublin Scioto and Canal Winchester, Delaware Hayes defeated Canal and Franklin Heights, Westerville North steamrolled Worthington Kilbourne and Scioto and Westerville South was victorious against Heights and Kilbourne. Both Westervilles participated in the Battle in the 614, but with different results. South was upset by Africentric, while North pulled off an impressive win against Kettering Alter, considered one of the top Division II teams in the state.

The Week Ahead: Hayes and North stand at the top of division with 6-1 records, while Big Walnut and South are a game behind. The Golden Eagles can shake things up when they host Hayes on Friday, while North should have a relatively easy game against Heights. Dublin Scioto will look to gain ground when they welcome South on Friday while Canal Winchester aims to get their first league victory when Kilbourne comes to visit. The Wolves will first have an intriguing game against DeSales, a team that has had some success against the OCC of late, on Tuesday. Then on Saturday, Canal hosts Thomas Worthington and North takes on Akron Buchtel.

The Week That Was: Both Marysville and Olentangy remain undefeated in the division and are so thanks to recent one-point league victories. Marysville survived Olentangy Berlin, while Olentangy did the same against Dublin Jerome. Meanwhile, Thomas Worthington received their first league victory against Hilliard Darby. Jerome finally broke their losing streak with a win over St. Mary's Memorial on Sunday. Berlin also picked up a couple nice non-league wins over the weekend against Whitehall and Columbus Academy while Marysville suffered a defeat to Bishop Watterson.

The Week Ahead: The Braves start the week off against state-ranked Delaware Hayes for a non-league game on Tuesday. They then square off against the Monarchs to determine who will remain undefeated in the division on Friday. In other league action Friday, Thomas Worthington visits Berlin and Darby hosts Jerome. Saturday includes some intriguing non-division games as Marysville takes on Upper Arlington and Berlin hosts Bishop Hartley.

The Week That Was: The league game of the week took place on Tuesday as the top division teams Olentangy Orange and Hilliard Bradley squared off, with the Pioneers securing a two-point win. Upper Arlington got a two-point win of their own against rival Dublin Coffman on Friday and Hilliard Davidson is still seeking their first division win as they fell to Olentangy Liberty. Orange meanwhile remains the area's only undefeated team, as they picked up an easy win over Thomas Worthington but had another close, two-point victory against Grove City. The Jaguars bounced back from their loss to Orange with a comfortable win over Groveport Madison, but suffered heartbreak again as they suffered a one-point defeat on Sunday to the defending state champions, Akron Hoban. The Wildcats didn't have much luck over the holiday weekend either, as they fell to Harvest Prep.

The Week Ahead: Upper Arlington gets things going on Tuesday when they travel to Tri-Valley. Then on Friday, league action picks back up and they take on Davidson. Liberty will try to hand Orange their first loss and Coffman will travel to Bradley. On Saturday, Davidson hosts Miami Trace and both Olentangy schools will be at Reynoldsburg for the Jared Sullinger Classic. Liberty will take on Imani Christian (PA) and Orange squares up against Walnut Ridge.

OCC-Ohio

The Week That Was: It's fair to say at this point, no division has as much parity as the OCC-Ohio. Grove City and Westerville Central lead at 3-1, with New Albany, Gahanna and Pickerington North just a game behind. The Greyhounds picked up a big win against Gahanna on Tuesday, as they edged out a two-point victory while the Warhawks gathered an easy decision over Westland. New Albany did something that would require a deep dive into the history books as they pulled off back-to-back wins at both Pickerington schools, first a league decision over Pickerington North followed by an upset over Pickerington Central. They finished the week 3-0 after a victory over Heath on Monday. Westerville Central had the same record and collected additional wins against Hilliard Darby and Dayton Belmont. North went the opposite direction and went 0-3 as they followed their loss to New Albany with close defeats to Newark and Cincinnati St. Xavier. Gahanna ended their week with an impressive win on Sunday against Lexington, who was previously undefeated and top ranked in the state in Division II.

The Week Ahead: Friday presents an opportunity for some movement in the standings as league action takes place. North hopes to end their losing streak as they visit Gahanna, New Albany and Westerville Central will look to continue their winning streaks when they face off and Grove City should stay firm at the top of the division as they travel to Westland. The only non-league games will be Grove City against Central Crossing on Tuesday and New Albany against Independence on Saturday.
