A look at City League basketball in 2024

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After a tough weekend at The Challenge, where no team won a game, the City League resumes league play on Tuesday with two matchups that will determine first place in both the north and south divisions.

What has this season looked like for teams, which teams are looking to be in control of their destiny to a City League championship game?

That along with games to watch for the week can be found below.

City League North

The Season So Far: Northland and Linden-McKinley are both unbeaten in the division so far, boasting twin 4-0 records. The Panthers lead the division in total wins with seven to the Vikings five. Beechcroft follows at 3-1 with games still looming against the leaders of the north. Centennial is 2-2 with a win over Beechcroft under their belt, East, Mifflin and Whetstone have identical 1-3 records in the north and International is the only winless team in the City League north at 0-4.

Most recently for City League north teams, Linden and Northland both defeated their opponents handily, beating Centennial and East respectively on Friday. Also on Friday, Beechcroft kept International winless on the season in the division and Mifflin edged out a win over Whetstone, 58-51. Linden went on to lose to Worthington Kilbourne at The Challenge on Saturday by a score of 50-37 and Centennial traveled to Upper Arlington and lost as well.

The Week Ahead: The Northland Vikings and the Linden-McKinley Panthers will battle on Tuesday night for the top spot in the division. Both teams have tremendous guard play as the Panthers Phil Towns and the Vikings King Kendrick are two of the top scorers in the entire City League. This game will likely have the representative of the north division in the City League championship game, with Northland hoping to make it back-to-back seasons in the championship game and the Panthers looking to get there for the first time since 2020.

Also, a battle for third place is taking place as a rematch between Beechcroft and Centennial takes place at Beechcroft. The Stars already hold a win over the Cougars and now at home, Beechcroft looks to get their win back over the visiting team.

Beechcroft also travels to Linden on Friday in what could be a sneaky important game if Linden slips up to Northland and Beechcroft can beat Centennial on Tuesday.

City League South

The Season So Far: Just like the north division, the south has two 4-0 teams, with the Walnut Ridge Scots and the South Bulldogs leading the way for the right to represent the south division in the City League championship game. Three teams are tied at 2-2, as West, Marion Franklin and defending City League south champion Africentric all have the same division record. Eastmoor Academy and Briggs have the same 1-3 record while Independence is winless at 0-4.

As league play picked back up for everybody on Friday, Walnut Ridge got a huge home win over a surprising Marion Franklin team at home 76-39 and South went on the road and beat Briggs 59-43. Africentric picked up a tough home win over West, 61-56, in the game of the night in the entire City League. The Warriors also picked up their first league win in an 84-46 road win over Independence.

The three City League south teams that got to play, before the event was suspended, were all handed losses on Saturday at The Challenge event which was held at Africentric. South, Eastmoor and Walnut Ridge all lost to their OCC counterparts.

The Week Ahead: Both leaders in the South division face-off on Tuesday as Walnut Ridge travels to South High School for sole possession of first place and the inside track to the City League championship game. These teams are both well-rounded and this game will be a physical ball game with two of the best coaches in the entire area. Africentric will travel to Marion Franklin on Tuesday as well in an up-and-down affair with two athletic teams.

The Scots have a fun rest of the week as well, they will have a tough matchup against West on Friday before taking on Dayton Dunbar at the Flyin’ to the Hoop event on Saturday.
