The holiday season brought us some upset gifts with more matchup treats ahead

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- From 270 Hoops, we hope all our readers and viewers have enjoyed a wonderful holiday season.

Not even a month into the season, we've been gifted some fantastic local hoops. Right before teams took a brief pause in the schedule for the holiday, we saw some eye-popping results in the OCC that shook up the power rankings.

Before games resume again on Wednesday, let's review the past week and then some games ahead, as OCC teams will take the remainder of the year off for league play and sharpen their abilities against non-conference opponents.

OCC-Buckeye

The Week That Was: The Buckeye division featured some of the week's most interesting results. It began Sunday at Capital University for the 5-C Classic in which Pickerington Central fell victim to Richmond Heights, while Reynoldsburg lost a heartbreaker in a double-overtime loss to Cleveland St. Ignatius, an early favorite for game of the year. Newark also struggled in non-conference play with a home loss to Olentangy Liberty on Tuesday. Yet it was the Wildcats that bounced back in high fashion as they upset the Raiders at home on Friday. Newark now takes an early lead in the Buckeye division at 2-0, while every other team is at 1-1, except for Central Crossing, who is still winless in conference play.

The Week Ahead: Newark will hold on to their conference lead for at least another week, as only non-league games are on the schedule. Beginning Wednesday, Groveport Madison, fresh off two straight wins, visits Upper Arlington while Lancaster hosts St. Charles. On Friday, Newark will welcome Riverside and on Saturday, Reynoldsburg looks to break their two-game losing streak as they visit Lima Senior.

OCC-Capital

The Week That Was: It was a chaotic week in the largest OCC division, as each Capital team had two league match-ups. The result? A crowded four-way tie at the top of the standings, as Delaware Hayes, Dublin Scioto, Westerville North and Big Walnut are all 3-1. How did we get here? On Tuesday, those teams picked up wins respectively against Worthington Kilbourne, Canal Winchester, Westerville South and Franklin Heights. On Friday, they all picked up an additional league win, except for previously undefeated Hayes, who was upset by Westerville South, who sits at 2-2 in conference play.

The Week Ahead: No league games are scheduled through the rest of the calendar year, but there is some non-conference play. On Wednesday, Dublin Scioto and Franklin Heights will take on the City League, with games against Marion Franklin and Briggs, respectively. The marquee game will be on Thursday, as a top 5 duel between Westerville North and undefeated Olentangy Orange takes place at Otterbein. Westerville South will have an intriguing game of their own on Thursday as they host Harvest Prep, perhaps the area's best Division III team. Delaware Hayes welcomes Olentangy Berlin on Friday then Saturday caps the week with Big Walnut traveling to Ashland and Canal Winchester hosting Watkins Memorial.

OCC-Cardinal

The Week That Was: It was another tough go for teams in the Cardinal who went a combined 0-4 in non-league games, as Dublin Jerome lost to Bishop Hartley and Dublin Scioto, Marysville lost to Marion Harding and Hilliard Darby fell to Grove City. The Monarchs bounced back with a league win against the Celtics and Olentangy defeated Thomas Worthington, as they are the sole 2-0 teams in the division. Olentangy Berlin won their only game of the week, a conference match against Darby and are now 1-1 in the division.

The Week Ahead: The Cardinal division will look for a bounce back week before they face each other again in the New Year. Jerome will have a tough task of breaking their four-game losing streak when they travel to Westerville Central on Thursday. Darby takes on cross-town foe Hilliard Davidson on Friday, while Marysville hosts Jonathan Alder. Berlin has back-to-back games that start on Thursday against New Albany and conclude with Delaware Hayes on Friday. Headed out of the region, Thomas Worthington will take on Cleveland Vllla Angela-St.Joseph's and Olentangy plays a team from Tennessee.

OCC-Central

The Week That Was: Olentangy Liberty had a wild ride, which began with an away win at Newark but followed by a home loss to Upper Arlington on Friday. The Golden Bears win over the Patriots followed their victory against Worthington Christian on Monday. Both Olentangy Orange and Hilliard Bradley picked up league duels over Dublin Coffman and Hilliard Davidson, respectively, and remain 2-0 at the top of the division.

The Week Ahead: We'll find out more of our #1 ranked team, Olentangy Orange, when they play top-ranked teams Westerville North and Westerville Central on Thursday then Saturday. The Shamrocks look to build some consistency via two road games, first to Beechcroft on Wednesday and then Pickerington North on Saturday. Olentangy Liberty will be in Nashville against Tennessee competition, while Upper Arlington will host Groveport Madison on Wednesday and visit Teays Valley on Saturday.

OCC-Ohio

The Week That Was: Gahanna and Grove City made further solid impressions as they were the only teams to win both of their games. Gahanna had a league win over New Albany, followed by a road victory at Licking Heights, while Grove City took care of Hilliard Darby before they upset division foe Westerville Central.  The Warhawks also defeated Licking Heights and Westland squeezed past Independence after a loss the evening before to Pickerington North.

The Week Ahead: Pickerington North begins the week Wednesday at Watkins Memorial. Grove City has a strong non-league test at Watterson on Thursday, the same day New Albany hosts Olentangy Berlin. Gahanna travels to DeSales on Friday and Westerville Central caps the week with an intriguing showdown at Olentangy Orange on Saturday.
