Nubians jump out to early lead and never look back in convincing win

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Africentric picked up yet another district championship as they started out hot against Columbus Academy and did not look back all evening on Thursday night.

The Nubians picked up back-to-back district titles after defeating Columbus Academy by a final score of 78-56.

Starting the game on an 11-2 run, Africentric put the Vikings on notice that this would not be their night.

Xavier commit and Nubian senior Dailyn Swain threw a beautiful dime to Laron Fuller, who led in scoring in the first quarter, to start the game off 7-0.

The opening quarter ended after an unreal three-quarter court shot from Columbus Academy’s Theo Falkenhain to cut the lead to 24-11 after the opening eight minutes.

Columbus Academy cut the lead to nine in the second quarter, 28-19 with 5:29 left in the second quarter, but Africentric answered with an emphatic run of its own in under two minutes.

Swain drained two free throws and gave his team a 36-19 lead with 2:39 remaining in the half.

A technical foul was given to Swain after a dunk, the ball popped out of the rim while he was hanging on it. After Falkenhain made two from the charity stripe, the Vikings still trailed 36-21.

The remarkable Swain hit a three-pointer from the wing as time expired in the first half to give his Nubians a 41-24 lead going into the break.

Africentric junior guard Cortez Freeman started the party in the second half with a layup. From then on, it was the Nubians extending or keeping the lead at a sizable margin for the rest of the game.

Swain was more of a distributor in the second half and threw some nice passes to cutting teammates for easy buckets. The Nubians took a 55-34 lead into the final quarter after another layup from Freeman.

In the fourth quarter, everything was over as Africentric began to realize what was in front of them.

At the end of the game, the Nubians were able to advance by a score of 78-56.

Sophomore Vikings guard Theo Falkenhain led his team with 20 total points, including a three-quarters court shot and three total triples.

Charlie Haywood was second on the team in scoring with 11. MJ Jackson and Miles Freeman each scored seven as well.

Swain led Africentric with 23 total points. Laron Fuller had 18 and Cortez Freeman added 12 for the Nubians.

Africentric will travel to Ohio University for their next game as they take on the winner of Garaway and Malvern next Wednesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

With back-to-back district championships, the Nubians are two wins away from another final four appearance.
