Division II - Central 2

#3 Bexley 48, #5 Bloom Carroll 42

Bexley used a 16-0 run to take the lead late in the fourth quarter and secure the victory to advance to the district finals to take on No. 2 North Union on Saturday at 3:30 pm at Capital University.

After establishing a lead (5-3 and 12-11) early in the game, the Lions fell behind and spent the remainder of the game playing catch up. Bloom Carroll opened the fourth quarter with a basket by Alyssa Brown but Sydnie Smith answered with a tough layup.  Bratton finished a shift left handed layup for the Bulldogs and Tessa Brooks drained a three pointer to put Bloom Carroll up 39-32 midway through the final frame.

Madison Ingram converted a three point play to get the offensive side of things rolling for the Lions. Smith added a layup to cut the Bulldog lead to just two points. At the 3:04, a basket by Ingram tied the game at 39. Nearly a minute and a half later, Sofia Sheridan's bucket gave the Lions the lead yet again.

Almost immediately, Smith scored another two points, pushing the Bexley lead to four. Bloom Carroll failed to convert on the next possession and was forced to foul. Mikayla Williams and Smith each sank two free throws and Sheridan added one more to cap the 16-0 run. Emil Bratton managed to sink a three from the wing as time expired but it was too little, too late for the Bulldogs.

To start the game, Smith connected in the paint for two to push an early lead for Bexley.  Marissa Wilkinson responded with a three ball to give Bloom Carroll a momentary lead. Ingram established herself as a force in the paint early by converting on an old fashioned three point play to give the Lions a 5-3 lead. Wilkinson drained back-to-back three pointers to regain the lead.

Again in the paint, Smith finished a lay-in but was answered by Bratton. Ingram closed the quarter with a layup, cutting the lead to two (11-9) after one quarter. Smith and Ingram dominated the lane and combined for all nine Bexley points in the quarter.

Reese McClellan opened the second quarter with a three to give Bexley their last lead until late in the fourth quarter. A layup by Brooks regained the lead for Bloom Carroll and Bratton expanded it with five straight points, finishing off a 7-0 run. Two more points from Smith stopped the run and both teams traded baskets to close out the quarter. After two, Bloom Carroll held a narrow 22-18 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless until the 6:24 mark when Smith drained a three from the top of the key to cut the lead to just one point. Bratton responded to expand the lead but Ingram answered inside yet again. Brown drained a three pointer from the corner for the Bulldogs and Sheridan scored four straight points to tie the game at 27 with 4:10 left to go in the frame.

A layup by Brooks and a three by Bratton expanded Bloom Carroll's lead to five with minimal time left in the quarter. Sheridan made one of two free throw attempts and Ingram made tosses from the charity stripe to cut the lead to two by a score of 32-30 with one frame to play.

Bexley used a 16-0 run to take the lead in the fourth quarter and seal their spot in the district finals.

Ingram led Bexley with 20 and Smith added 17. Bratton paced Bloom Carroll with 16.

It would be amiss not to mention the defensive efforts by Williams. While Bratton ended the game with 16 points, she made things difficult every time Bratton touched the ball. Without this defensive effort late in the game, there certainly could have been a different ending.

#2 North Union 47, #11 Hamilton Township 33

North Union advances to the district finals to take on No. 3 Bexley on Saturday at 3:30 pm at Capital University.
