Jaguars outscore Pioneers by 12 in the fourth, Norris finishes with 30 points

HILLIARD, Ohio -- The undefeated is no more, at least in Division I, as Hilliard Bradley took control in the fourth quarter and gave Olentangy Orange their first defeat of the season, with a 63-55 Jaguars win.

Bradley trailed nearly the entire game and entered the fourth down a five point deficit. Yet the Jaguars wasted little time to trim the lead. After junior Cade Norris hit a step-back three, fellow junior Jeb Bischoff grabbed a steal on Orange's next possession and found junior Ian Abrass for an open transition lay-up to give Bradley their first lead since the first quarter.

Between the powers of Norris, who scored 12 of his game high 30 points in the fourth, and a significant advantage at the free throw line (Bradley made 8-of-11, while Orange was 2-of-9), the Jaguars outscored the Pioneers by 12 points in the final period to pull off not only the upset, but a pivotal win in OCC Central play.

Norris, son of Bradley head coach Brett Norris, was simply spectacular. Listed as a 6'3 guard, but truly a complete utility player, not only was a consistent bucket, but finished with a team high four assists.

While Norris took on the bulk of scoring duties, he was complimented with a supportive team effort. Junior Andrew Lamb scored eight of his ten points in the second half and grabbed five rebounds. Senior David Heath, who added an element of toughness we tend to see from a Bradley role player each year, scored eight points along with five rebounds, while sophomore Garrett Sever had eight points of his own.

Bischoff, typically Bradley's best outside shooter, had a difficult night from the field, but contributed at a crucial time as he scored all three of his points late in the fourth quarter at the foul line. Although Bischoff was well below his scoring average, he delivered a solid defensive effort with two steals and added two assists.

Orange, who has arguably been the area's best team, looked to be in their usual control throughout the first three periods. Senior Jordan Edwards was on his way towards an MVP type evening, as he at times seemed unstoppable when driving off the dribble along with his usual display of dazzling passes. Yet a frustrating night at the foul line, particularly in the fourth quarter, overshadowed his 21 point, six assist effort.

Senior Elias Lewis finished with 12 points, which included two quick release threes in the fourth that allowed Orange to hang until the final minute. The talented shooting guard was otherwise mostly held in check as he was held below his regular scoring average. Fellow seniors Nick Chapman and Drew Ballinger scored nine and seven points, respectively.

The Jaguars victory not only gives them momentum, but a crucial win in conference play as they are now tied with Orange for second and one game behind Olentangy Liberty.

Hilliard Bradley (7-3, 3-1) will need to keep their momentum running another 24 hours, as they have another challenging opponent on Saturday against Africentric at The Challenge at Pickerington North.

The Pioneers (10-1, 3-1) will look to get back on track Tuesday as they host Thomas Worthington.

For more on Friday's surprising win, check out the 5 Keys To The Game:

1. Super Cade: Mark this one down as one of the best individual performances of the season so far. The do-it-all junior scored nearly half his teams points and did so from all three levels. Norris consistently made the right play and stepped up in the fourth when the Jaguars needed him the most. I can't wait to break down his performance in the upcoming Prospect Scouting Report, but the third youngest Norris brother is coming along at a pace we've come to expect from the family. All that said, for Bradley to have ambitious postseason aspirations, Norris and the Jaguars will continue to need elevated performances from his teammates.

2. Free Throw Woes: It wasn't the only factor that decided the Jaguars fourth quarter run, but it was a significant one. Bradley outscored Orange 8-2 at the charity stripe and the Pioneers seven misses could have made a significant difference. Beyond free throws, Bradley used well-scripted plays from the inbound pass and had a better overall team offense, while the Pioneers seemed to favor iso-ball.

3. Missing McCollum: When the Orange senior guard and Hillsdale College commit suffered a hip injury at the end of the third game of the season, it was natural to expect a drop-off in production for Orange. Yet each individual that sees the floor had elevated their role in his absence and allowed Orange to stay unbeaten. For the first time this season, it appeared the void of McCollum was especially evident. Edwards was fantastic, but had his struggles in the fourth. Meanwhile, Lewis had a relatively quiet night for his standards and no other player scored in double digits. The hope and expectation for Orange is McCollum will return later this month. His presence will be crucial in order for Orange to make a serious run to the state tournament.

4. Second Half Studs: Norris wasn't the only Jaguar to deliver a strong final two periods. A majority of Bradley's players stepped up their efforts in the second half as well. Lamb scored eight of his ten in the second half, while Bischoff, Sever and Abrass scored all of their combined 13 points in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars looked like a different team when the supporting cast was making shots and also complimented Norris' high level passing efforts. More performances like this and the Jaguars should begin to look like a district title contender similar to Bradley teams of the past.

5. OCC Central Race: For the last few years, the OCC Central is consistently the most competitive top-to-bottom division in the area. That appears to be the case once again and currently looks to be a three-way race between Orange, Bradley and current league leader Olentangy Liberty. Bradley will take on both teams once more, while Orange is set to play Liberty twice. That leaves a lot of games ahead and should make for a fun finish to end the season.

MVP: Cade Norris (Hilliard Bradley junior guard who led with 30 points, four assists, two steals and a rebound)

Top Scorer: Norris

Hustle Player of the Game: David Heath (Hilliard Bradley senior forward, with eight points, five rebounds and a block).
