Jenna Kopyar drained five threes to help lead the Rocks to victory

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In what could be a possible future district tournament matchup, Dublin Coffman handed Marysville their first loss of the season Tuesday night in a cross-divisional OCC battle. Seniors Jenna Kopyar and Tessa Grady led the way, combining for 34 of the Rocks’ points in their 67-58 victory.

The Monarchs started out hot thanks to a three from senior Ava Wilkerson which gave them a momentary lead. Coffman quickly answered with seven straight points before senior Leah Brown stopped the bleeding with a layup, two of her seven points in the quarter.

On the next three possessions, the Rocks drained back-to-back-to-back threes, two from Kopyar and one from Grady, kicking off a massive run. Senior Keiryn McGuff converted on a layup and Kopyar drained her third three of the game to continue the Rocks' domination. Junior Jojo Eberhart gave Marysville a sliver of hope with 12 seconds left with a three point play. Coffman closed the first quarter on a 14-3 run, giving them a large lead headed into the second quarter by a score of 25-13.

Kopyar picked up right where she left off to start the second quarter with yet another three. Both teams traded buckets throughout the frame but Coffman maintained nearly a double digit lead the entire time. Finally, the Monarchs cut the lead to single digits close to the end of the quarter before Grady drained another three to give the Rocks a 40-29 lead going into halftime.

Marysville returned in the second half with renewed energy and really started to lock down on the defensive end of the floor. They started the quarter with a 7-0 run capped by a three from Wilkerson. After a basket by junior Avery Mather, the Monarchs scored five more points before a fifth and final three from Kopyar.

Junior Addy Tweed played a large role for Marysville in the third quarter. She forced several turnovers and scored four points down the stretch to help cut the Coffman lead. The lead shrank to one point but McGuff extended it to three just before the close of the quarter giving Coffman a 48-45 lead with one quarter to play. After giving up 40 points in the first half, Marysville held Coffman to just eight points and gave themselves a shot to win the game in the fourth.

After trading baskets to start the quarter, another three by Wilkerson provided the Monarchs with their first lead since the first possession of the game. Grady quickly answered with another three but a layup by Tweed tied the game at 56. A three by Jenkins gave the Rocks the lead for good as they outscored Marysville 9-4 over the last several minutes of the fourth.

Kopyar led the Coffman charge with 19 points, Grady added 15, McGuff scored 13 and Jenkins added 11. Wilkerson paced the Monarchs with 16 in the loss and was supported by Brown with 12 and Tweed with 10.

  1. Downtown from three: Both teams rely heavily on the three ball and Tuesday, Coffman shot lights out. In the first quarter, Kopyar drained three and Grady added one. In the second quarter, Grady and Kopyar each added another and junior Avery Mather joined the party with one of her own. Kopyar sank the sole Rock three in the third, her fifth of the game. In the fourth, Jenkins made two during crucial possessions and Grady added one more. Eleven (11). Eleven three pointers. That’s hard to beat.

  2. Limiting Eberhart: As a whole, the Rocks played stellar defense on reigning OCC Cardinal player of the year Jojo Eberhart who is an incredibly tough assignment. Collectively, they held the junior to just nine points on the night. What was more important than holding her to single digits in the scoring column? The Monarchs’ offense was completely disrupted in the first half, pushing Coffman to an early lead. It was clear that the game plan from the jump was to disrupt Eberhart and every player on Coffman’s roster knew where she was at all times.

  3. Free throws: Free throws seem to play a major role in many games and Tuesday was no exception. Coffman shot 12/14 from the line including 4/5 in the fourth quarter to help seal the game.

  4. Offensive balance: The Rocks had a different player step up at different times all night long. Kopyar led the way with 19 points and Grady followed close with 15. McGuff scored 13 and Jenkins added 11. By spreading the wealth on offense, Coffman is a tough matchup for any team and that proved to be true tonight. As soon as Marysville would lock down one matchup, another Rock would start scoring.

  5. Late Run: In a game full of runs, the final nail in Marysville’s coffin was a late run by the Rocks. Coffman outscored the Monarchs 12-6 in the final minutes of the game to bring it home. This included threes from Grady and Jenkins, four free throws by Mcguff and a two from Kopyar.
