We release our first power rankings in Division I this season

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After the opening week of high school basketball, we release our first power rankings of the year in Division I.

1. Pickerington Central (0-1): The Tigers got absolutely spanked on Saturday against SPIRE Academy. Things do not get easier, as Central travels to Newark on Friday to open up OCC play. Newark upset the Tigers on the opening night of OCC play a year ago. Could it happen again?

2. Dublin Jerome (0-1): Jerome had a very difficult opener against the No. 1 junior in the state in 6-foot-11 center Raleigh Burgess of Sycamore. The road ahead gets no easier, as Jerome has two weekend games against Thomas Worthington and St. Charles, who upset Cincinnati Moeller on Friday.

3. Westerville North (0-0): North will open up the season on Friday in a very winnable game at home against Franklin Heights. The Warriors have one of the most talented rosters on paper. Will that translate to the floor?

4. Olentangy Orange (0-0): The Pioneers get a very tough test to open the year at home against St. Charles. Then Orange will host Hilliard Davidson to open up OCC play on Friday. We'll find out quickly if the hype is real for Orange.

5. St. Charles (1-0): St. Charles sent shockwaves through the state when they upset Moeller on the back of Zach Auletta's game winning three as time expired. The Cards will look to keep rolling this week with a pair of top five matchups against No. 2 Dublin Jerome and No. 4 Olentangy Orange. If they can go 2-0, or even 1-1, look for them to stay in the top five. A 3-0 start could warrant a No. 1 ranking based off schedule strength alone.

6. Delaware Hayes (2-0): The Pacers are underrated among top teams in the area. This team fired on all cylinders in knocking off Lakota East, who some considered a top 10 team in Ohio. The Pacers get two more road dates this week against Marion Harding and Big Walnut.

7. Hilliard Bradley (1-0): Death, taxes, Bradley being led on the court and on the bench by a Norris father-son duo. Junior Cade Norris powered the Jags to a big win over Cincinnati St. Xavier on Friday. The Jags will look to knock off Upper Arlington on Friday to open up OCC play at home.

8. Grove City (1-0): The Greyhounds are a sleeper in the area this year, as this team really does not have a weakness. They will start OCC play on the road at New Albany on Friday. If they want to win the OCC this year, they cannot drop any winnable games.

9. Newark (2-0): Newark rolled through their opening weekend at home, knocking off Perrysburg and Licking Heights. The Wildcats will open up OCC play on Friday at home against the defending state champions. A win over Pickerington Central would cause some chaos in the early going of the season.

10. Reynoldsburg (0-1): The Raiders lost a tough game to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary on Saturday. If this athletic team can get some discipline and quality point guard play, they will be a force. Reynoldsburg travels to Groveport Madison on Friday, a team the Raiders were swept by in the regular season before getting revenge in the sectionals last postseason.

11. Pickerington North (1-0): While Bradley has the Norris father-son duo, North now has the Bates father-son combination. That combo proved to be highly effective on Saturday as freshman JR Bates powered the Panthers to a big win. North will open up OCC play on Friday against a talented Westerville Central squad that knocked off Walnut Ridge over the weekend.

12. South (1-0): The Bulldogs are back to Division I after playing the last two seasons in Division II. South picked up a quality win over New Albany last weekend. They have two very winnable games against Division II competition in Centennial and London this week.
