Westerville South moved to 20-0 with a dominant road win on Tuesday

WORTHINGTON, Ohio -- Still unbeaten.

In a non-league showdown between two OCC foes on Tuesday night, Westerville South (20-0, 13-0) moved to a perfect 20-0 on the season after dominating the fourth quarter in a 77-50 win over Thomas Worthington (8-12, 4-5).

Entering the game as clear underdogs against the only undefeated team in Central Ohio, Thomas Worthington came out ready to play.

Following a score inside from Benson OrientalKingston Johnson came up with a big steal and score at the end of the first to put the Cardinals ahead 14-12 after the first quarter.

Regaining the lead back immediately, Isaiah Johnson hit a three-pointer for Westerville South just a few seconds into the second quarter of play before Reign Winston nailed one of his own to push the score to 18-14 in favor of the Wildcats.

After a second quarter full of fouls, Westerville South headed into the locker room ahead 32-23 at the break as they created some much needed separation in the second frame.

While Westerville South received some momentum in the third behind two big dunks from Drey Carter and Andy Badu, the scoring of Thomas Worthington sophomore Shaheem Nieves kept the Cardinals in it, trailing just 50-42 after three quarters.

Unfortunately for Thomas Worthington, that is as close as they got for the rest of the night as the wheels fell off the bus for them in the final eight minutes.

Forcing some key turnovers with their high-level ball pressure and knocking down a handful of triples, Westerville South ran away with the game in the final quarter, outscoring Thomas Worthington 27-8 in the frame to come away with a convincing 77-50 victory.

Leading the way for the Wildcats, Carter scored a team-high 23 points while Winston added 21 on five triples and Jadi Cunningham scored 10 of his own.

Moving to 20-0 following the victory, Westerville South has just one regular season game left as they will host Worthington Kilbourne in OCC-Capital play on Friday night.

For Thomas Worthington, the Cardinals struggled to get much offensive production outside of Nieves. They fall to 8-12 after the loss and will wrap up regular season play on Friday night when they host Olentangy Berlin.

Drey Carter (6'8 dual forward / Westerville South / 2022): Carter turned in a solid performance for Westerville South on Tuesday night, leading the Wildcats with 23 points. The senior is one of the area's most intriguing prospects due to his offensive versatility and unique build. While he is a knockdown shooter, Carter did not nail one triple tonight and we were pleased to see him being in aggressive in getting to the rim. He nailed a couple of mid-range jumpers off the bounce, had a pair of crafty finishes around contact and also absorbed contact for a tough and-one to go along with throwing down an easy dunk in transition. With his ability to handle the ball, shoot over top of the defense and not force things, Carter is a matchup nightmare at the high school level and is a huge reason why Westerville South is still undefeated this late in the season. Wright State got a good one in the 6-foot-8 dual forward as he is only going to continue to improve as he fills into his body.

Andy Badu (6'5 F / Westerville South / 2022): While this may be cliché, there is only one word to describe Badu. Grinder. The Westerville South senior made a ton of winning plays all night long for the Wildcats, getting things done on both ends of the floor and making an impact that doesn't necessarily show up in the box score. While he threw down two big dunks and hit a mid-range jumper off the catch on the offensive end, Badu's biggest impact came on the other end of the floor. The 6-foot-5 forward took a pair of charges, blocked three shots (two of which came on the same possession) and did a great job of cleaning up the glass for the Wildcats all night. In order to go undefeated for an entire regular season, teams must have players who star in their role. Badu does exactly that for Westerville South as he does what is asked of him at a high level and contributes to winning in multiple ways.

Shaheem Nieves (6'2 SG / Thomas Worthington / 2024): Nieves turned in one of the best performances that we have seen from him to date on Tuesday night. Being Thomas Worthington's only consistent source of offense throughout the night, the sophomore guard showed off his bag of scoring tricks on that end of the floor. He finished three tough and-ones through contact, knocked down a couple of three's and also got inside for a couple of other tough scores. Nieves is an efficient guard who can shoot it and create his own shot off the dribble as we were impressed to see him operate so efficiently against a Westerville South defense that is loaded with length and athleticism. While Thomas Worthington has not enjoyed the same success this season that they have in year's past, players like Nieves will certainly help them as they look to get back to that level of success moving forward.

Reign Winston (6'4 SG / Westerville South / 2022): Winston has always been a threat to score from beyond the arc for Westerville South but is really coming into his own this season as an excellent 3&D role player. Knocking down five triples in Tuesday night's contest, Winston finished with 21 points as he also went a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line and converted on one two-point field goal. The senior guard also forced a couple of turnovers for Westerville South, most notably sitting down on his matchup and forcing a five-second call in the second half when Westerville South was beginning to mount some serious momentum. Just like Badu, Winston is a player who is elite in his role as he has been a major key to Westerville South's success this season.
