Bradley dominated Groveport from start to finish

GROVEPORT, Ohio -- Hilliard Bradley dominated Groveport Madison from start to finish in Tuesday’s cross-division OCC matchup. Senior Macy Chapman’s defensive effort sparked the Jags on offense, pushing them to a 54-34 victory.

Bradley started the first quarter on a 9-2 run, including seven points from Mac. Chapman. Freshman Aubriona Benjamin scored two baskets for the Cruisers but sophomore Reagan Voigt answered with two of her own to end the quarter. The Jaguars left the first frame with a 17-6 advantage.

It was a slow offensive start for both teams in the second quarter. Junior Tyairah Flowers opened things up with three straight points for the Cruisers. Junior Leigha Dennison sank a free throw for Bradley’s first point of the quarter with 4:54 left.

Freshman Jolisa Butts drained a three but Voigt responded with five points of her own to expand the Jags’ lead. Benjamin stole the ball and finished a layup at the opposite end to pull within eight just before halftime but Bradley led 24-16 after two periods.

The Jaguars held Groveport Madison to just four points in the third quarter which enabled them to expand their lead even further. Sophomore Loghan Cromer played big minutes in the third, scoring six points. Mac. Chapman continued to be a defensive terror for Bradley, forcing more turnovers and scoring six points in transition. With one quarter to play, the Jags boasted a 37-20 lead.

The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle on both ends of the floor but Bradley ended up outscoring Groveport 17-14. Junior Marissa Jones scored first on a right handed drive to cut the lead to 15 followed by a three point play by senior Abby Harden for the Jags.

Jones and Benjamin scored back to back buckets to cut the lead again but Voigt and Harden responded. Butts banked in a three pointer midway through the quarter to shrink the lead to 15 but yet again, the Jags would respond. Bradley went on a 10-3 run to finish the quarter before freshman Bryelle Stevens knocked down a three from the left corner to end the game.

Mac. Chapman led the Jags with 17 points and was supported by Cromer with 10. Benjamin paced the Cruisers with eight, Butts added seven and Flowers scored six in the loss.

Let’s take a look at Tuesday’s top performers.

Macy Chapman (5’9 G / Hilliard Bradley / 2022) - Chapman was a relentless spark the entire game for Bradley. The senior has extremely active hands on defense and moves her feet quickly and efficiently. She forced close to a dozen turnovers that led to easy baskets on the other end. Chapman attacks the basket with purpose and finds a way to get to the rim and the foul line. Tuesday she was a bit inconsistent from the line but with a little practice this can improve. She distributed the ball well in the half-court and when in transition, tallying at least 5 assists. When the senior was not on the floor, the Jags struggled offensively. It’s plain and simple, Bradley plays better with Chapman on the floor.

Aubriona Benjamin (5’5 F / Groveport Madison / 2025) - Benjamin caught our eye early in the first quarter because of her rebounding ability and tenacity. She has a powerful right handed drive that led her to two buckets. She was most effective on the offensive boards where she kept many plays alive with tipped balls and rebounds. Being only a freshman, Benjamin has plenty of time to sharpen up her basketball skills and could be an even bigger difference maker in the coming seasons for Groveport.
