Alder secures CBC title with a dominating victory over London

PLAIN CITY, Ohio -- Wednesday was an eventful night in Plain City. In addition to celebrating their seven seniors, Jonathan Alder clinched a CBC title with their 57-32 victory over London.

Alder started the first quarter on fire from three. Sophomore Evan Platfoot and senior Katie Hooley hit back to back threes and senior Reggan Gray added a mid range jumper to give the Pioneers an 8-0 lead before London was forced to use a timeout.

London was held scoreless until the 4:32 mark of the first when Alana Kramer was fouled and sank two free throws. The barrage of three pointers continued for Alder who knocked down an additional three in the quarter, two more from Hooley and one from senior Mary Ferrito. After one quarter, the Pioneers seemed to be well on their way to victory with a 20-8 lead.

The second quarter London had different plans. Their offense picked up in a major way, outscoring Alder 14-6. The Raiders slowly chipped away at the lead thanks to Kramer’s leadership and tenacity; she scored five in the frame. Sophomore Natalie Zabloudil’s mid range jumper just before the buzzer cut the Pioneer lead to just six points. Alder went into halftime with a 26-22 lead.

The third quarter started exactly the same as the first with an 8-0 Alder run. This time, the Raiders were held scoreless until the 1:20 mark of the period when Kramer sank a free throw, London’s only point of the quarter. Hooley, Platfoot, Ferrito and senior Ellie Heisler drained threes in the quarter which expanded their lead to nine. With one frame to play, the Pioneers were back in the driver's seat winning by a 42-23 margin.

Alder’s press was too much for London to handle, forcing bad shots and multiple turnovers. Alder took advantage on the offensive end with five straight points to start the quarter. Platfoot and Hooley added two more three pointers. The Pioneers outscored the Raiders 15-9 in the final stanza.

Hooley paced the Pioneers with 17, Platfoot added 15 and Ferrito scored 14 for the Pioneers. Kramer scored 13 for the Raiders in the loss.

Let’s take a look at Wednesday's top performers!

Mary Ferrito (G / Jonathan Alder / 2022) - There are very few players in the area who work as hard as Ferrito does. She warms up harder than some kids play. To top it off, the senior is also a darn good basketball player. She has a beautiful outside shot and drained two three pointers Wednesday, both from the left side of the basket. She attacks the rim with intention, mainly with her right hand, and isn't afraid of contact. She has excellent court vision and is a relentless defender. She has an extremely high motor and takes no plays off. Ferrito is the definition of a great teammate and leader and would excel at the next level.

Katie Hooley (G / Jonathan Alder / 2022) - Hooley can flat out shoot. The senior connected on five threes on Wednesday night in addition to a long midrange jumper from the top of the key. Hooley is a major threat in Alder’s offense and opens up opportunities for both herself and her teammates by being consistent from deep.

Evan Platfoot (G / Jonathan Alder / 2024) - Platfoot is an excellent guard. She handles the ball with confidence, makes great decisions with the basketball and is an effective passer. She has a nose for the ball, is a pesky defender and offensive rebounder and is attacking the basket well. Wednesday, she knocked down three three pointers and got to the rim with both hands. She facilitates Alder’s offense like a seasoned veteran and will be the center of this team in the coming seasons.

Alana Kramer (5’8 F / London / 2023) - Kramer was the best player on the floor Wednesday for London. The junior plays an interesting hybrid position. She is the center of the Raiders’ press break and handles the ball effectively. Once the press is broken, Kramer turns into more of a center, playing with her back to the basket most possessions. She has a great right handed hook shot and a smooth up and under. She is a force under the basket and a consistent rebounder. Developing moves over her left shoulder would help her effectiveness significantly. With a little polishing, Kramer could find the right fit at the next level.
