Greyhounds use 17-2 second quarter to pull away from the Comets

GROVE CITY, Ohio -- Wednesday night’s matchup featured an OCC cross divisional rivalry between Grove City and Central Crossing. The Battle of Broadway was a bit one sided this season thanks to a 17-2 second quarter run by the Greyhounds. They pushed past the Comets by a score of 62-33.

The first quarter was a game of small runs. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first thanks to baskets by Olivia Keeney, Kayla Jones and Carly Turner. The Comets responded with eight straight points, including two threes from freshman Savannah Hamilton.

Gianna Boyce and Keeney added five more points for GC but Hamilton knocked down two more three pointers on back to back possessions to give Central a momentary lead. Boyce and Keeney would close out the quarter with back to back baskets, giving the Greyhounds the lead for the remainder of the game. Grove City led Central Crossing 16-14 after one period.

The Greyhound run continued into the second quarter where they scored 13 straight points before Hamilton finally got the Comets on the board. Grove City’s defense was too much for Central Crossing to handle as these would be their only points in the quarter. A basket by Mackenzie McGowan and a free throw by Keeney closed out the quarter giving the Greyhounds a 33-16 edge heading into halftime.

Both teams traded multiple baskets to start the third quarter. Thanks to a 6-0 run, Central Crossing managed to cut the lead to just 12 points midway through the period. After this run, Grove City took the game into their hands, scoring 10 straight to expand their lead. With one quarter to play, the Greyhounds held a commanding 49-29 lead.

Keeney continued her domination in the fourth quarter, starting with a 7-0 run of her own, giving her 23 on the game. The Greyhounds tough defense was on display yet again, holding the Comets to just four points in the final frame.

Keeney led the Greyhounds with 23 in the win. Hamilton paced the Comets with 16 in the loss.

Let’s take a look at Wednesday's top performers.

Olivia Keeney (G / Grove City / 2023) - Keeney did it all for the Greyhounds on Wednesday. The junior started off the game by banking in a three pointer. She scored multiple times in transition off of steals thanks to her active hands on defense. She attacks the basket strongly with both right and left hands and is ready for contact. She is a pesky defender, consistent playmaker and great competitor for Grove City.

Savannah Hamilton (5’4 G / Central Crossing / 2025) - Though just a freshman, Hamilton was one of the best players on the floor on Wednesday. She connected on four three pointers in the first quarter, all from different locations on the floor. In the second quarter, she slashed to the middle of the key for a nice jump shot and hit another mid range jumper in the third. She is a decent ball handler and fiery defender. She could use a little consistency in her shot and when handling the ball but that will come with time. Hamilton will be one to watch over the coming seasons.
