A LOOK AT THE TOP PERFORMERS FROM THE OGBR Classic in the City

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Pickerington Central played host to the first annual Classic in the City in conjunction with the Ohio Girls Basketball Report (OGBR). The event featured top talent from Ohio and across the country.

Let's take a quick look at the results of the first four games and the top performers.

Game 1: Granville 58, Sidney 34

Game 2: Stow 66, Toledo Rogers 33

Game 3: Africentric 32, Teays Valley 25

Game 4: Alter 46, Worthington Christian 35

Cate Schieber (5’9 G / Granville / 2022) - Schieber, the game MVP and Belmont Abbey commit, was deadly from three. The senior started the game 5/5 from deep. More impressive than her shooting ability was her intensity at the top of Granville’s zone. Her length and athleticism forced Sidney’s offense off the three point line, making it hard to score. Schieber is a great leader, has a high IQ and makes everyone around her better.

Allie Stockton (5’9 G / Sidney / 2023) - Stockton stepped up for the Yellow Jackets Saturday. She is tough and attacks the basket with purpose, unafraid of contact. Her three point shot is smooth and consistent from any spot on the floor. She has a high basketball IQ, passes well, and was the best rebounder for Sidney. She could make a lot of programs better at the next level.

Ella Wigal (5’11 G / Granville / 2023) - Wigal is a deceiving threat from literally anywhere on the floor. In the first half, she found the most success posting up on the block and finishing through contact. In the second half, she stretched the floor and scored in transition. She is athletic, finds open teammates consistently, rebounds every possession and puts herself in a position to be successful on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

Anna Hurst (5’9 G / Stow / 2024) - Hurst is the best athlete on Stow’s team. Saturday, she frequently outran her teammates and Rogers for wide open layups in transition. She has elite lateral movement and quickness and it shows on the defensive end. She handled the ball with confidence and rarely turned it over. She was always in the right place at the right time, a common theme for Stow.

Kristin Chmielewski (6’0 G / Stow / 2022) - We really like Chmielewski, the MVP of game two. She has high level capabilities in all aspects of the game. She knocked down several mid range jumpers, is a great rebounder and can post up with her back to the basket. Her passing ability is nothing fancy but is very effective. Chmielewski defended well and is an excellent communicator. According to our media packet, she is uncommitted. Coaches, take a look at this one!!

Natiah Nelson (5’8 G / Toledo Rogers / 2024) - Nelson is young and has a very high ceiling. She was most dominant with her back to basket, posting up. She can elevate over defenders and is a strong finisher. She attacks well and can handle the ball the full length of the court. She had a beautiful turn around jumper in the third that appears to be her go-to move. She could turn into a great talent in the coming seasons.

Breayah Jefferson (5’5 G / Toledo Rogers / 2024) - Jefferson was a spark for Rogers Saturday. She has unbelievable quickness and a first step that is hard to guard. She blew by defenders on several occasions for open layups. She can shoot from deep but could use a little more consistency in that department. She is a tenacious defender. Like Nelson, Jefferson could grow into quite the player over the next couple of seasons.

Ariel Grace (5’5 G / Africentric / 2023) - Grace, the game three MVP, was clutch in the fourth quarter when the Nubians needed an offensive threat most. She scored a basket to give Africentric a two point lead and kicked off a 6-0 game changing run. Grace was fouled late in the fourth and connected on both free throws to seal the win for her team. She is an intense defender, handled the ball well under pressure and has a high motor.

Sam Thompson (5’8 F / Africentric / 2024) - Thompson had a four inch disadvantage when guarding Kennedy Younkin but that did not deter her. She is a fearless defender who is almost always in the correct position. She was quiet offensively but has the skill set to be very successful. Thompson scored six points, all in the first quarter and close to the basket. She handles the ball with confidence and has great potential.

Rayanna Howell (5’5 G / Africentric / 2024) - Howell, a lefty, was a much needed offensive threat for the Nubians Saturday. She attacked the basket hard and finished at the rim. She grabbed an offensive board late to put Africentric up by four. She is an excellent defender and gave the Teays Valley guards problems the entire game. The sophomore trio of Thompson, Grant and Howell will be fun to watch over the next several years.

Ashley DeWeese (5’8 G / Teays Valley / 2022) - Amid offensive struggles, we really liked what we saw from DeWeese on Saturday. She was aggressive, was poised handling the ball despite endless pressure and never quit. She is a great true point guard with a high motor. Her only basket came off of an offensive rebound in the middle of the key. DeWeese is a good leader and communicator for Teays Valley.

Maddie Moody (6’1 F / Alter / 2025) - Moody plays like a seasoned veteran despite being a freshman. She is a solid force inside and finishes strong through contact. She’s an excellent defender and is active in passing lanes, disrupting offenses. She is effective and efficient defending both guards and posts. She can handle the ball the full length of the court and her length is a major asset. She has a huge amount of potential and she’s just getting started.

Caraline Kernan (5’8 G / Alter / 2022) - Kernan, the game four MVP, is an elite leader and teammate. She does whatever the team needs and then some. She is an extension of their coach on the floor, a constant communicator and is constantly encouraging teammates. Kernan is a relentless competitor and defender with an insane motor and contagious energy. She takes when she can offensively but doesn't force it. She hit a big basket with about a minute left in the game to extend the Alter lead. We’d take Kernan in our starting five any day.

Meghan Mayotte (G / Worthington Christian / 2023) - Mayotte is a do it all guard. Her gorgeous three point shot keeps defenses on their toes and opens up the floor. She makes purposeful drives and great decisions on when to stop and pop or take it all the way. Her length proves useful at the top of the Warrior’s zone. Mayotte is improving every game and will be a next level player.
