OCC Weekly: A dive inside of the OCC

A weekly look into OCC basketball

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The last two weeks in the OCC provided some great games and performances. In this article, I will recap the last two weeks around the OCC and preview the games ahead.

There are seven players who average above 19 points per game in conference play. Ajay Sheldon from Dublin Coffman tops the list with 26 ppg. Olentangy’s Ethan Smith is right behind him at 23 ppg. Derrick James (Canal Winchester) and Quinn Corna (Upper Arlington) both sit at third with 21 ppg. Jerry Saunders from Pickerington North is in fifth with 19.7 ppg. Cade Norris from Hillard Bradley and Sean Jones from Gahanna round out the list with 19 ppg.

There are two remaining undefeated teams in the OCC. Upper Arlington is 10-0 and Westerville South is 8-0.

Buckeye Division

The Buckeye is the only division in the OCC where all teams are .500 or better. Pickerington Central leads the OCC-Buckeye at 7-1 after wins over Cincinnati Woodward and Mentor. Newark is right behind them at 8-2 following a 56-52 win over Shawnee behind 17 points from Grant Burkholder. Reynoldsburg got a win over Worthington Kilbourne at the Harvest Prep Holiday Classic to improve to 6-3 good for third place in the division. Sonny McGee’s 25 points led Central Crossing to a 67-64 win over Franklin Heights. They are 5-3 and fourth place in the Buckeye. Groveport Madison and Lancaster and both 5-5 and tied for fifth in the division. 

Capital Division

Westerville South are the leaders of the Capital with a record of 8-0. They are led by Drey Carter (16.8 ppg) and Reign Winston (12 ppg). They have big wins over Hillard Davidson (63-50) and Dublin Coffman (66-61). Delaware Hayes is second at 8-2 and is coming off a 54-49 win over Mount Vernon. Jesse Burris lit up the floor with 31 points in that game. Westerville North is 6-3 following a 42-41 win over Westerville Central. Worthington Kilbourne is fourth in the Capital with a 4-2 record with their last win coming over Big Walnut, 53-48. 

Cardinal Division

Dublin Jerome’s 7-1 record is good for tops in the Cardinal as Ryan Nutter and Sasha Stavroff both average 10.5 points per game. They beat Bishop Hartley 65-31 as Nutter and Stavroff combined for 25 points in the win. Thomas Worthington is 4-3 and second in the division. They last beat Wadsworth, 76-64, in a game where Joey Zalewski dropped 23 points. Hillard Darby is third with a 4-5 record after beating New Albany 59-47 where Gio Roberts dropped 15 points. 

Central Division

Upper Arlington is playing some great defense and executing on both ends of the floor which has propelled them to a 10-0 record and a 2.5 game lead in the division. They also lead Division 1 with strength of schedule points at 45. They are beating solid teams and there is no sign of them slowing down. They are led by a senior duo of Quinn Corna (20 ppg) and Nick Heath (16.5 ppg). Hillard Davidson is behind them at 7-2 and is coming off a win over Westerville Central, 47-41. Jayden Nervis had 21 in the win for Davidson. Dublin Coffman is 5-2 and sits at third in the Central division. They are coming off a 75-42 win over Marysville where Ohio commit Ajay Sheldon dropped 24 points. Hillard Bradley sits at 6-3 with a commanding 57-21 win over Tri-Valley in their last game. 

Ohio Division

Gahanna leads the Ohio division with an 8-1 record and suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of St.Vincent- St Mary. Marquette commit, Sean Jones, leads the Lions with 19.9 ppg. Pickerington North is second in the division with a 6-1 record and are led by a senior guard duo of Jerry Saunders and Dior Connors. They are coming off a 59-56 win over Hillard Davidson where Saunders and Connors combined for 23 points. New Albany is behind North with a 6-2 record and are coming off a 63-60 over Teays Valley. Josh Evans had 22 points in the Eagles win. 

Looking ahead...

Friday and Saturday are sure to bring some fireworks as there are tons of great games across the OCC. Here are some notable games happening this weekend. 

On Friday, Upper Arlington will look to stay undefeated as they travel to Dublin Coffman. Groveport Madison will host Newark in a battle of OCC-Buckeye teams. Thomas Worthington and Hillard Darby will also square off as both teams look to earn their fifth win of the year. New Albany will head over to Pickerington North in a clash of six win OCC-Ohio teams. 

Saturday is also a big day around Central Ohio. Gahanna travels to Pickerington Central in a game of two state championship hopefuls in one of the most anticipated matchups of the year. This game features two 4 star recruits in Sean Jones and Devin Royal. Westerville South takes on Westerville Central in a battle for bragging rights. There is also a five game slate at Africentric where the OCC will play teams from the Columbus City League. Starting at 1 p.m., Northland will take on Olentangy Orange. Then, New Albany plays Walnut Ridge followed by Pickerington North vs Eastmoor Academy. Next, Hillard Bradley will play Beechcroft and the night cap features the host Africentric taking on Dublin Coffman.
