Tegan Myers pours in 23 points to lead Logan to an impressive win over Canal Winchester

CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio -- In a very competitive game on Tuesday night, Logan used a combined 40 points from their senior duo of Tegan Myers and Ashton Mahaffey to pick up a quality road win over Canal Winchester, taking down the Indians 58-54.

After Logan built an early lead in the contest, Canal Winchester senior Derrick James began to heat up at the end of the first quarter, converting on a couple of tough scores to spark a 7-0 run and help the Indians take an 18-16 lead after one.

Carrying this momentum over to the second quarter, Canal Winchester forced a Logan timeout when they increased their lead to 30-21 with 3:40 left in the half following an and-one from James and transition score from Devin Goins.

Making the move to a zone defense following the timeout, Logan slowed down Canal Winchester for the rest of the half and hit a few timely shots on offense to trim the deficit to five, trailing 33-28 at the break.

While already not playing a deep rotation, the Chieftains took an unfortunate hit late in the half when Myers was called for an offensive foul that sent him to the bench with three first half fouls.

This sent Logan into the second half with two starters each having three fouls, the other being senior guard Mason Frasure.

Refusing to let this affect their game, the Chieftains continued to run their zone defense in the second half, forcing Canal Winchester to make jump shots in order to beat them.

Logan trimmed the deficit to just one with 5:45 left in the third as Myers nailed back-to-back three's to make it 35-34.

Scoring a quick eight points in the final couple minutes of the frame, Logan headed into the fourth quarter ahead 42-39.

Struggling to hit shots late, Canal Winchester did not score in the fourth quarter until the 3:35 mark, allowing Logan to push their lead to 52-43 with 2:16 left.

Refusing to go away quietly, Canal Winchester sophomore Cortez Freeman hit two three's late, one of which trimmed the Logan lead to just 57-54 with 12.6 seconds to go, however Frasure nailed one of two at the line to seal the deal as Canal Winchester could not convert on their final possession as they trailed by four points.

Leading Logan with 23 points, Myers was excellent all night and continued his stellar senior season in the win.

The Chieftains also received 17 points from Mahaffey while Cayden Alford pitched in 13 of his own.

Moving to 6-4 on the season, Logan picked up their third win over an OCC opponent as they also took down Groveport Madison and Lancaster earlier in the season.

For Canal Winchester, James led the way with 17 points while Freeman pitched in 16 of his own.

Falling to 3-5 after the loss, the Indians will look to bounce back on Friday as a tough test looms at undefeated Westerville South.

Tegan Myers (6'2 SG / Logan / 2022): The Myers family is known for getting buckets at Logan and Tegan is certainly carrying that tradition on this season. Notching his sixth 20+ point game of the season on Tuesday, the Logan senior tallied a game-high 23 points to lead the Chieftains to a gritty win. Myers is a skilled guard who looks to score first as he has a really pretty stroke from deep and is also capable of getting inside and finishing. Myers was extremely efficient from beyond-the-arc on Tuesday, nailing four three's, three of which came off the dribble, and not forcing anything. Myers has an extremely strong build at 6-foot-2 as he also bullied a couple of Canal Winchester defenders for easy scores inside during the contest. Myers would be an excellent pick up for any small college programs looking for a guard who can absolutely fill it up as he has done just that on a consistent basis all season.

Derrick James (5'9 PG / Canal Winchester / 2022): Turning in a stellar performance on Tuesday night, James heated up in the first half and showed his elite skillset on both ends of the floor. James has a combination of quickness, handling ability and change of speed and direction that you probably will not find from any other guard in the area outside of Sean Jones. Keeping defenders off balance all night, the senior guard hit shots off the dribble from the mid-range and beyond the arc, converted on two and-ones and even hit a left handed floater while working out of the post. James best trait is his passing ability, however, as he dropped some beautiful dimes during the contest, several of which unfortunately did not end up as assists. Getting things done on both ends, James also came up with a few steals and blocked a pair of shots during the game. Scholarship programs in the region should be all over James, who currently only holds offers from Cedarville and Concord.

Cortez Freeman (6'2 HG / Canal Winchester / 2024): Freeman showed flashes of his high level scoring ability on Tuesday as he finished the game with 16 points and scored it in a variety of ways. The sophomore hit a mid-range jumper off the dribble and also nailed two three's, one of which was off the dribble, showing off his ability to get to his spots and score it from the perimeter. With good length at 6-foot-2, Freeman was also able to get inside for a few finishes, demonstrating his ability to finish with both hands and around defenders. The sophomore is a natural born scorer who can really fill it up when gets hot and he also contributed on the defensive end by coming up with a couple of steals and drawing three offensive fouls. As he continues to progress, Freeman has the chance to put up some really good numbers throughout his career.

Cayden Alford (6'6 traditional big / Logan / 2023): Alford provided Logan with a valuable boost on Tuesday that they would not have won the game without. Locking down the glass, Alford created several second chance opportunities and limited them for Canal Winchester as he blocked a couple of shots as well and was great in the middle of the Logan zone. Offensively, Alford used his size to convert on a handful of easy looks near the rim that his teammates helped create. On a team like Logan where most of the scoring comes from the guards, it is valuable to have a big who will play their role and the junior did just that for the Chieftains last night.

Ashton Mahaffey (5'10 G / Logan / 2022): While Mahaffey did not have his hottest shooting night on Tuesday, we loved the way that the senior didn't let that affect his game as he finished with 17 points to help power Logan to a victory. While he knocked down one three, converted a layup within the offense and had a couple of nice assists in the contest, we really want to spotlight Mahaffey here for his consistency at the free throw line throughout the contest. Going 12-for-12 from the stripe, the senior stepped up when his team needed him and knocked down four big free throws in the final quarter to help seal the deal. Mahaffey showed great veteran leadership in the contest as he stayed ready every play and gave Logan consistent free-throw shooting that they would not have won without.
