Coffman dominates the Lions from start to finish behind 19 points from Lafler

DUBLIN, Ohio -- The Dublin Coffman Rocks dominated from start to finish in Tuesday’s matchup with Gahanna Lincoln. They jumped out to an early 11-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 64-40 victory.

Senior Cassidy Lafler opened the game with a contested lay-in from the right side. On the next possession senior Ellie Vaccari connected for three from the wing. Senior Taylor Covington would add a basket and Lafler would score four more points before Lion junior Laila Marshall got Gahanna Lincoln on the board. Coffman held the Lions scoreless until 3:40 left in the first quarter. Vaccari and Lafler combined for 16 of the Rock’s 18 first quarter points. They held the Lions to just eight points, six of which came from Marshall. Coffman entered the second quarter with an 18-8 lead.

The game cooled off a bit in the second quarter but Lafler continued to dominate in the paint and extended her game out to the three point line. Junior Tessa Grady drained a three pointer just before the end of the half to give the Rocks a 28-14 lead heading into halftime.

Marshall put together a great third quarter but the deficit was already too much to overcome. She scored eleven points in the quarter in a variety of ways. Grady had the hot hand for the Rocks to start the quarter, scoring five points early. Covington got in on the action, completing two and-ones. Coffman expanded their lead to 53-30 with one quarter to play.

Lafler added two more points to her great performance and Marshall scored four before they both retired to the bench. Senior Sequoia Bradley and freshman Ava Collins scored five points each in the quarter for the Lions and Rocks respectively.

Lafler led the Rocks with 19 points. Grady added 13 and Vaccari scored 10 in the win. Marshall scored a game-high 23 for the Lions in the loss.

Let’s take a look at Tuesday’s top performers.

Ellie Vaccari (5’7 G / Dublin Coffman / 2022) - Vaccari normally comes off the bench for the Rocks but with Jenna Kopyar out of pocket, she stepped into a starting role. She absolutely crushed it. She was a great burst of energy in the first quarter and played a big role in Coffman’s ten point lead. She has a smooth, consistent shot from three and drained two in the first quarter. She added a layup off a perfectly timed backdoor cut off an accurate bounce pass from Covington. She moves her feet well on defense and makes great basketball plays. Vaccari will play an important role in the Rocks tournament run this season.

Cassidy Lafler (5’11 F / Dublin Coffman / 2022) - This was by far the best we have seen Lafler play this season. She looked comfortable in the key, attacking the basket and finishing through contact. She connected from three but didn't settle for outside shots. Her rebounding effort was ever present on both ends of the floor. She executed a beautiful full court pass off of a defensive rebound to Grady in the second half and her high basketball IQ was evident all night. Lafler is another important piece of Coffman’s puzzle that could make a major impact at the next level, especially at the D2 level.

Tessa Grady (6’2 G / Dublin Coffman / 2023) - Grady is continuing to grow into a very well rounded player and is part of the core of this Coffman squad. Tuesday she scored from three, slashing to the basket, in transition and off of offensive rebounds. Her presence was evident on the defensive end, ending the game with multiple blocks and a handful of rebounds. She extends plays with tipped balls and her length on the offensive end. She has one of the highest basketball IQs around and growing by the game. She already holds many offers, don’t wait to offer this versatile winner.

Laila Marshall (5’7 G / Gahanna Lincoln / 2023) - Marshall put on an offensive show Tuesday night in Dublin. She scored 23 of the Lions 40 points in a variety of ways. She drained two three pointers but her most impressive baskets were off the dribble. In the first quarter, she finished on the left side with two beautifully executed Euro steps. In the second, she knocked down a turn around jumper off the block. In the fourth, Marshall drained a pull up jumper from the middle of the key and a bank shot from the left side after a pivot over her right shoulder. Her one-on-one defense is outstanding and she is not afraid to pressure the ball. She is developing into an offensive threat from anywhere on the floor and should be on everyone’s radar.
