Jayden Nervis goes for 21 points to lead Hilliard Davidson to a solid win over Westerville Central

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Hilliard Davidson used tough defense and dominance on the glass to beat Westerville Central 47-41 on Thursday.

Peyton Frey scored the first six points for Davidson as they led 11-2 with 2:49 left in the first.

Both teams traded buckets for the rest of the frame as the first quarter ended with a 17-7 Davidson lead.

The second quarter started slow for both teams as the first bucket didn’t come until four and a half minutes into the frame. After Dallas Tucker scored twice, Davidson called a timeout with 1:16 left in the half.

Davidson ended the half with a 22-15 lead behind Peyton Frey’s eight first half points. One achilles heel for Central was their lack of defensive rebounding. Davidson feasted on second chance points all game which was a driving factor in their win.

The offense for Central started to pick up in the third quarter as they cut the Davidson lead to five with 1:45 left in the quarter. A bucket by Donovan Hunter ended a strong third quarter for Central as Davidson led 32-29 going into the fourth.

Both teams started trading buckets as with two minutes left, Davidson led 40-38.

Devin Martin got a steal and called a timeout to give Central a chance to tie the game with under 2 minutes left to play. They turned the ball over twice in the last minute of the game which led to a Jayden Nervis transition dunk to give Davidson a five point lead.

They hit their free throws to close the game and improve to 7-2 on the year. Westerville Central fell to 3-7 after this loss.

Jayden Nervis (WG / 2022 / Hilliard Davidson): Nervis showed his inside-out scoring ability as he dropped 21 in the win. Even as the tallest player on his team, Nervis showed his range as he knocked down four shots from long range. He also does a nice job getting in the paint and finishing at the rim. Nervis uses his long wingspan to compete defensively and grab rebounds. He had two putbacks from offensive rebounds and got to the free throw line four times. Nervis ended the game with an emphatic dunk off a steal which basically sealed the game for Davidson. He will be a key piece for Davidson if they hope to make a run this season.

Peyton Frey (F / 2023 / Hilliard Davidson): The 6-foot-5 junior put on an impressive display of how to score with your back to the basket. On numerous occasions, Frey was given a post up from a set play. He showed great footwork and patience as he converted most of these chances. He ended with 13 points and was a beast on the offensive glass for his team. On one possession, Frey had three offensive rebounds which eventually ended in a bucket. He also guards ball screens well and is able to keep up with faster players. Frey has been an important part of Davidson’s success this year and will need to continue to be their rock inside.

Dallas Tucker (G / 2024 / Westerville Central): Tucker was the primary ball handler for Central and showed his ability to effectively run an offense. He is at his best when he is driving to the basket and can finish well over taller defenders. The sophomore finished with eight points and multiple assists as he found open teammates with regularity. Tucker does an excellent job of changing speeds while dribbling and rarely turns the ball over. Just a sophomore, Tucker will improve tremendously as he gets more game action.

Nick Patton (G / 2024 / Westerville Central): Patton was the other Central sophomore that impressed me. He finished with 11 points and gave a nice boost to his team’s offense. He hit two mid range pulls up which is something few players can do. He also did a nice job coming off of screens and hit a catch and shoot three from this. Patton hustles on defense and dives for every loose ball. He is a part of a great sophomore class for Central which can only get better.
