Brae Friesner and Nate Nemeth lead Berne Union to a solid win over Amanda-Clearcreek

AMANDA, Ohio -- Berne Union fought off a late comeback against Amanda-Clearcreek and added a Division III win to their resume on Thursday, defeating the Aces 57-51.

Brae Friesner was excellent on offense, leading the Rockets with 19 and seemed to always strike back when they were losing momentum. Nate Nemeth also shined as a two-way wing forward and showed off his great athleticism.

Despite the loss, Clayton Rhyne was a consistent source of scoring for Amanda-Clearcreek and often found a way to put points on the board.

Berne Union dominated the first quarter offensively but were struggling to get defensive rebounds. They got out to a 14-6 lead early but didn’t score in the last two minutes and their lead was shortened to 14-9.

The second quarter got chippy halfway through after a frustrated Friesner received an intentional foul during a loose ball. Nemeth scored seven of his 12 points in this quarter with a three-pointer and two layups.

Amanda-Clearcreek took their only lead late in the third quarter with a three-pointer from Rhyne but it was short-lived as Friesner struck back with his own one possession later.

The offense started strong for both teams in the fourth quarter and Amanda stayed in the game late. Friesner and Nemeth sealed the game away with points from the free throw line for a 57-51 win.

Brae Friesner (5'9 G / Berne Union / 2022): Brae played an excellent game for the Rockets, scoring at all three levels and getting tough buckets along the way. Not only did Friesner hit contested shots from deep, he was finishing at the rim over players much taller than him and and being physical the whole time. Friesner has ferocity on the court and wants to attack no matter his matchup. Friesner also played solid on the defensive end with a steal and his best defending came on the ball.

Nate Nemeth (6’1 WF / Berne  Union / 2023): Nate Nemeth is an exceptional two-way player that has no quit. His best offensive play came in the second quarter when Friesner was on the bench due to foul trouble, hitting a three-pointer and finishing two tough layups. On the defensive end his hands were active and his rotations were consistent. Nemeth showed his athleticism on defense and was his team's leading rebounder in a game they struggled to rebound.

Clayton Rhyne (6'1 WG /Amanda-Clearcreek / 2023): Clayton Rhyne is a Swiss Army Knife and has been an elite scorer all season. Not only did he have 19 points in this contest, he hit shots from all levels and facilitated the ball. The offense was the most fluid when he was on the court and he was getting touches every possession. Rhyne had 13 of his 19 points in the second half, keeping the Aces within striking distance nearly the whole game. Despite switching multiple defenders onto him, Berne Union had to live with the shots he hit and strike back harder.
